Description
Indications
Tenofovir is utilized alongside other HIV medications to manage HIV infection effectively. It works by reducing the quantity of HIV in your body, thereby enhancing your immune system’s functionality. This reduces the likelihood of HIV-related complications, such as new infections and cancer, while also enhancing your overall quality of life. Tenofovir falls into the category of drugs known as nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
Tenofovir is also employed in the treatment of a specific type of liver infection known as chronic hepatitis B infection. In this context, it functions by reducing the concentration of the hepatitis B virus in your body, effectively impeding its growth.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication orally, with or without food, in accordance with your doctor’s instructions, typically once daily.
The prescribed dosage is determined by your medical condition, kidney function, and your body’s response to the treatment. In pediatric patients, the dose is also contingent on their body weight.
It is of utmost importance to adhere strictly to your doctor’s instructions when taking this medication, as well as other HIV medications. Do not miss any doses, alter your dose, increase the frequency of administration, or discontinue taking the drug (or other HIV medications) even briefly, unless specifically directed to do so by your healthcare provider. Deviating from the prescribed regimen without your doctor’s approval may lead to an increase in viral load, render the infection more challenging to manage (due to resistance), or exacerbate side effects.
To ensure optimal effectiveness, maintain a consistent schedule when taking this medication. To assist with this, aim to take the medication at the same time each day.
