Description
Indications
Lisinopril is utilized in the management of hypertension. Its primary function is to reduce high blood pressure levels, which in turn mitigates the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney dysfunction. It is also prescribed to manage heart failure and enhance survival rates following a heart attack. Lisinopril belongs to a class of drugs referred to as ACE inhibitors, which operate by inducing relaxation of blood vessels to facilitate more efficient blood flow.
Uses and Dosage
Lisinopril is available in tablet and liquid formulations, and is intended for oral administration. Typically, it is taken once daily and should be taken at the same time each day to facilitate adherence. Take lisinopril exactly as prescribed, avoiding any modifications to the dose or frequency of administration unless instructed to do so by your doctor.
If the liquid formulation is prescribed, avoid using a regular household spoon to measure doses. Instead, utilize an oral syringe specifically designed for measuring liquid medication.
Your physician will likely initiate treatment with a low dose of lisinopril and gradually increase the dosage over time.
While lisinopril is effective in managing your condition, it does not represent a cure. Continue taking lisinopril even if you feel well. Refrain from discontinuing the use of lisinopril without first consulting your doctor.

Caution
Before initiating treatment with lisinopril, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any allergies to lisinopril, other ACE inhibitors (such as benazepril), or any other substances. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or other adverse effects.
Prior to using this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have a history of an allergic reaction that included facial, lip, tongue or throat swelling (angioedema), blood filtering procedures, or high levels of potassium in your blood.
Lisinopril may cause dizziness, and the use of alcohol or marijuana may intensify this effect. Avoid operating machinery or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can do so safely.
Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can cause dehydration, thereby increasing the likelihood of lightheadedness. Report any extended episodes of diarrhea or vomiting to your physician, and ensure that you consume enough fluids to avoid dehydration unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
This medication may elevate potassium levels in your body. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult with your physician or pharmacist.
Older adults may be more vulnerable to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness and increases in potassium levels.
Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. You should avoid becoming pregnant while using lisinopril since it may cause harm to an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor promptly to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication.
