Description

Indications

Varenicline is a pharmacological aid that assists adults in quitting smoking. For optimal efficacy, use this medication in conjunction with a comprehensive stop-smoking program that includes education, support, and counselling. Smoking cessation not only decreases the likelihood of heart and lung disease, but also reduces the risk of cancer.

Varenicline operates by inhibiting nicotine’s effects on the brain that stimulate the desire to smoke. Discuss the advantages and drawbacks of this medication, as well as other methods to quit smoking, including nicotine replacement therapy, with a healthcare professional.

Uses and Dosage

Varenicline is administered orally in tablet form. It is prescribed to be taken once daily initially and then twice daily in the morning and evening. After eating, take varenicline with a full glass of water, and make an effort to consume it at the same time(s) every day. Adhere to the medication regimen precisely as directed, and avoid taking more or less than recommended, or using it more frequently than instructed.

At the beginning of treatment, your doctor will probably start you on a low dosage of varenicline and gradually increase it over the first week.

There are three methods for taking varenicline to aid in smoking cessation:

First, you can select a quit date to stop smoking and begin taking varenicline one week before that date. During this first week of varenicline treatment, you may continue to smoke, but ensure that you make an effort to quit smoking on the chosen quit date.

Second, you may begin taking varenicline and then quit smoking between eight and 35 days after starting treatment with varenicline.

Finally, if you are uncertain if you are ready or if you do not want to quit smoking abruptly, you can commence taking varenicline and gradually stop smoking over 12 weeks of treatment.

It may take a few weeks to experience the complete benefits of varenicline, and there is a possibility that you may slip and smoke during your treatment. If this occurs, you may still be able to quit smoking. Continue to take varenicline and make an effort not to smoke.

Typically, varenicline is taken for 12 weeks. If you have successfully stopped smoking at the conclusion of this period, your doctor may recommend that you take varenicline for an additional 12 weeks. This could help prevent you from relapsing and resuming smoking.

If you have not ceased smoking by the conclusion of the 12 weeks, consult your doctor. Your doctor can assist you in comprehending why you were not able to quit smoking and develop a plan to attempt to quit again.
