Description

Indications

Citalopram, an antidepressant belonging to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) class of medications, is utilized in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and depression. The mechanism of action of SSRIs is believed to involve enhancement of serotonin neurotransmitter activity within the brain. Citalopram has the potential to elevate one’s energy levels and foster a positive sense of well-being.

Uses and Dosage

Celexa should be taken as directed by your physician, usually once daily in the morning or evening, with or without food. The precise dosage will be determined by factors such as your medical condition, response to treatment, age, laboratory test results, and any other medications you may be taking. Inform both your doctor and pharmacist of all the products you are using, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements.

To minimize the risk of adverse effects, your physician may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and not deviate from the prescribed dose, frequency, or duration. An increase in dosage or frequency of use will not lead to a faster improvement of your condition, but rather increase the likelihood of side effects.

Take this medication regularly to maximize its benefits and at the same time each day to aid in recall. Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as abruptly discontinuing its use may worsen your condition or lead to symptoms such as:

  • mood swings
  • headaches
  • tiredness
  • sleep changes
  • sensations similar to electric shocks.

To prevent these withdrawal symptoms, your doctor may gradually reduce the dose before stopping treatment. For further information, consult with your doctor or pharmacist. Report any new or worsening symptoms promptly.

It may take several weeks for the benefits of this medication to become apparent, and several more for its full effects to manifest. If your condition does not show improvement or deteriorates, inform your doctor immediately.

Caution

Before taking citalopram, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have an allergy to escitalopram, or any other drug allergies. The medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.

Citalopram may cause a heart rhythm condition called QT prolongation, which can lead to serious and potentially fatal fast or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, and fainting. The risk may be increased if you have heart problems, a family history of heart problems, low potassium or magnesium levels, or take other drugs that cause QT prolongation. Consult your doctor about the safe use of citalopram.

Citalopram may cause drowsiness or blur your vision. Avoid operating machinery or driving, and limit alcohol consumption. If you use marijuana, talk to your doctor. Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of the drug, such as bleeding, loss of coordination, and QT prolongation, and may also be at increased risk of developing hyponatremia. Monitor weight and height in children taking the drug.

During pregnancy, use this medication only if necessary as it may harm an unborn baby. Newborns born to mothers who took the drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may experience withdrawal symptoms such as feeding difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness, or constant crying. If you observe these symptoms in your newborn, seek medical attention. Citalopram can pass into breast milk and may have negative effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor, as untreated mental or mood disorders can be serious. If you are planning pregnancy or think you may be pregnant, discuss the benefits and risks of using the medication with your doctor.
