Description

Indications

Captopril is prescribed as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other medications for the management of elevated blood pressure and heart failure. It is additionally utilized to enhance survival rates and mitigate the risk of heart failure following a myocardial infarction in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. Captopril is further employed in the treatment of kidney disease resulting from type 1 diabetes and retinopathy (an eye disease).

Belonging to the class of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, captopril functions by reducing the activity of specific chemicals that cause constriction of blood vessels, resulting in smoother blood flow and improved efficiency of blood pumping by the heart.

Uses and Dosage

Adhere to the following guidelines provided by your doctor for the administration of this medication. Take it orally, preferably on an empty stomach, at least one hour prior to meals. The frequency of dosing typically ranges from two to three times per day.

The prescribed dosage is determined based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment.

To maximize the effectiveness of this medication, you must use it regularly. Establish a consistent routine by taking it at the same times each day.

Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as individuals with high blood pressure often do not experience noticeable symptoms.

For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take up to two weeks before you observe the full benefits of this medication. In the case of heart failure, it may require weeks to months before the full benefits are realized.

This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of allergic reactions involving swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, undergone blood filtering procedures (such as LDL apheresis or dialysis), have collagen vascular disease (such as lupus or scleroderma), or have elevated levels of potassium in your blood.
