Description

Indications

The estradiol and norethindrone skin patch is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. It is also prescribed to address vaginal changes, including dryness, itching, and burning, which are attributable to low estrogen levels or menopause.

This medication comprises a combination of two hormones: estradiol, an estrogen hormone, and norethindrone, a progestin hormone. These hormones are absorbed transdermally, entering the bloodstream to exert their effects. The mechanism of action involves the prevention of menopausal symptoms such as facial, neck, and chest warmth, as well as sudden episodes of intense heat and sweating (hot flashes) in women experiencing menopause.

Uses and Dosage

Please follow these instructions to apply the patch in a proper and professional manner:

  1. Begin by peeling off the backing from the patch.
  2. Choose a clean and dry area on the lower stomach to apply the patch.
  3. Press the patch firmly onto the skin, ensuring it adheres properly. Apply pressure for approximately 10 seconds.
  4. Avoid placing the patch on the breast or on skin that is oily, broken, or irritated.
  5. Refrain from applying the patch in areas where it may easily rub off, such as the waistline.
  6. When wearing the patch, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.
  7. Adhere to the instructions provided by your doctor for the usage of this medication.
  8. Typically, the patch is replaced twice a week, with an interval of 3 to 4 days. Adhere to the prescribed dosing schedule carefully.
  9. Dosage adjustments are determined based on your specific medical condition and response to the treatment.

When replacing the patch, ensure that you apply the new patch to a different area. Allow at least 1 week to pass before applying a patch to the same location. Dispose of the old patch by folding it in half with the sticky sides together and throwing it away in a trash bin, out of reach of children and pets. Avoid flushing the patch down the toilet.

If the patch falls off, reapply it to a different area. In the event that the patch does not adhere completely, apply a new patch and wear it for the remaining scheduled period. It is important not to wear two patches simultaneously.

To obtain the maximum benefits from this medication, use it regularly. To help you remember, change the patch on the same days each week. Consider marking your calendar as a reminder.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens during the course of treatment.

Caution

Prior to using this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, particularly to estradiol or norethindrone, as well as any other known allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before initiating this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, paying special attention to any instances of unexplained vaginal bleeding, certain types of cancers, blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, family history of medical conditions, personal or family history of swelling disorder (angioedema), blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated blood cholesterol/triglyceride levels, obesity, lupus, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), mineral imbalances, specific hormone disorders (hypoparathyroidism), uterus problems, gallbladder disease, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, certain blood disorders (porphyria), or mental/mood disorders.

Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products while taking this medication. The combination of estrogens and smoking significantly increases the risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attack, especially in women over the age of 35.

Notify your doctor if you have recently undergone surgery, are scheduled for surgery, or anticipate being immobilized for an extended period (such as during a long plane flight). These conditions heighten the risk of developing blood clots, particularly when using an estrogen product.

This medication may cause the appearance of blotchy and dark areas on the face and skin (melasma). Sun exposure can exacerbate this effect. Limit time spent in the sun, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and utilize sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.

Individuals who are nearsighted or wear contact lenses may experience vision problems or difficulties wearing contact lenses. If such problems arise, consult an eye doctor.

If you are scheduled to undergo an MRI test, inform the testing personnel about your use of this patch. Certain patches may contain metals that can cause severe burns during an MRI. Consult your doctor regarding the need to remove the patch before the test, apply a new patch afterward, and receive proper instructions for doing so.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly an increased risk of stroke, breast cancer, and dementia.

This medication should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately.

This medication passes into breast milk and may reduce the quantity and quality of breast milk produced. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
