Indications
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that effectively alleviates symptoms such as redness, irritation, itching, watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose caused by allergies, air irritants, and hay fever. It can provide relief for itching associated with allergic skin conditions and treat hives, including those triggered by exposure to cold temperatures and skin rubbing.
Cyproheptadine is occasionally administered to individuals who have received blood products as part of their medical treatment, and to those who have experienced life-threatening allergic reactions, after their symptoms have been brought under control with other medications. This medication functions by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body responsible for provoking allergic symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication orally, with or without food, according to the instructions provided by your healthcare professional, typically 2 to 3 times daily.
When using the liquid form of this medication, utilize a specialized measuring device or spoon to measure the dosage accurately, as household spoons may not provide an accurate dosage.
The prescribed dosage of this medication is contingent upon your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. In children, weight and body size may also influence the prescribed dosage. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or administer this medication more frequently than instructed.
Inform your healthcare provider if your condition fails to improve or deteriorates.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- dry mouth, nose, and throat
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- nausea
- chest congestion
- headache
- excitement (especially in children)
- muscle weakness
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- difficulty urinating
- vision problems
- nervousness
Caution

This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. The use of alcohol or marijuana may exacerbate these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or performing any tasks that require alertness or clear vision until you can safely do so.
Liquid forms of this medication may contain alcohol and/or sugar. Exercise caution if you have diabetes, liver disease, or any other condition requiring dietary restrictions or avoidance of these substances. Consult your physician or pharmacist for safe usage of this product.
Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication. This drug may cause excitement instead of drowsiness in young children.
Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, particularly drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, confusion, or difficulty urinating. These side effects increase the risk of falling.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly required. Discuss the benefits and risks with your physician.
It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your physician before nursing.
