Abilify is a medication used to treat a variety of mental and mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.
Abilify may be utilized in combination with other medications to treat depression. As an atypical antipsychotic drug, aripiprazole works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, resulting in decreased hallucinations and improved concentration.
The medication can aid in thinking more clearly and positively, reducing nervousness and promoting active participation in daily life. Aripiprazole has been shown to effectively treat severe mood swings and reduce the frequency of these episodes.
Uses and Dosage
Prior to initiating treatment with aripiprazole and with each refill, it is important to read the Medication Guide and Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist and to address any questions or concerns with your physician or pharmacist.
Aripiprazole should be taken orally, with or without food, as directed by a physician, typically once daily. The dosage is tailored to the individual, taking into consideration the individual’s medical condition, response to treatment, age, and any concurrent medications.
Inform your physician and pharmacist of all products being used, including prescription and non-prescription drugs and herbal supplements. To minimize the risk of side effects, the physician may start the medication at a low dose and incrementally increase the dosage.
Closely follow the physician’s instructions. The manufacturer advises swallowing the medication whole, however, some similar medications (immediate-release tablets) can be split or crushed as directed by the physician. When using the liquid form of the medication, use a specialized measuring device or cup and not use a household spoon to ensure accurate dosing.
