Fexofenadine is employed to alleviate allergy symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis, comprising runny nose, sneezing, redness, itching, or watery eyes, as well as itching of the nose, throat, or roof of the mouth. It is also utilized to mitigate symptoms of urticaria (hives), encompassing itching and rash. Belonging to a class of medications known as antihistamines, fexofenadine functions by inhibiting the effects of histamine, a substance in the body responsible for allergy symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
Fexofenadine is available as a tablet and a suspension (liquid) intended for oral consumption. It is typically ingested with water once or twice daily.
Fexofenadine’s efficacy is enhanced when not consumed with fruit juices such as orange, grapefruit, or apple juice.
Administer fexofenadine at approximately the same time(s) daily. Take fexofenadine precisely as instructed. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage, alter it, or take it more frequently than advised by your doctor. The dosage is determined by factors including your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Avoid increasing your dose or consuming this medication more frequently than prescribed.
Fexofenadine manages the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and urticaria but does not cure these conditions. Continue taking fexofenadine even if you feel well and are not experiencing symptoms. Delaying between doses may exacerbate your symptoms.
Before each use, vigorously shake the suspension to ensure even distribution of the medication.
Do not ingest antacids containing aluminum and magnesium within 2 hours of taking this medication, as they can reduce the absorption of fexofenadine.
Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- pain during menstrual period

Caution
- Before starting fexofenadine, disclose to your doctor or pharmacist any allergies you have, as well as any other allergies you may have. Inactive ingredients in this product could trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Prior to using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly if you have kidney disease.
- Liquid formulations may contain sugar, while rapidly-dissolving tablets may contain aspartame. If you have diabetes, phenylketonuria (PKU), or any other condition requiring you to limit or avoid these substances in your diet, exercise caution. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- This medication is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while taking fexofenadine.
