Indications

Bicalutamide is a prescription medication used to treat stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer, which is an advanced form of prostate cancer also known as stage IV cancer. As a hormone therapy, bicalutamide affects the hormones in the body by stopping the male sex hormone, testosterone, from promoting the growth and multiplication of prostate cancer cells. Bicalutamide is classified as an androgen receptor inhibitor or anti-androgen, which means it blocks the action of testosterone on the cancer cells.

To effectively treat prostate cancer, bicalutamide is used in conjunction with another type of hormone therapy known as a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog. These drugs work by reducing the level of testosterone in the body. By combining bicalutamide with an LHRH analog, it is possible to slow down or even halt the growth of prostate cancer.

Uses and Dosage

To ensure proper use of this medication, take it orally as directed by your physician, usually once daily with or without food.

Side Effects

• hair loss or thinning of the hair
• heartburn
• inability to have or keep an erection
• indigestion
• leg cramps

• muscle ache, cramp, pain, or weakness

• pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones

• swelling of the breasts or breast soreness in both females and males

• bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
• blood in the urine
• blurred vision
• body aches or pain
• chills
• cough producing mucus
• difficult or labored breathing
• dizziness
• dryness or soreness of the throat
• fever
• lower back or side pain
• nervousness
• painful or difficult urination
• pounding in the ears
• rapid weight gain
• slow or fast heartbeat
• sweating
• tender, swollen glands in the neck
• tightness in the chest
• tingling of the hands or feet
• trouble with swallowing
• unusual weight gain or loss
• voice changes

Caution

Prior to taking bicalutamide, inform your physician or pharmacist of any allergies you have, including allergies to this medication or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction or other complications.

Prior to using this medication, inform your physician or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly if you have a history of liver disease, diabetes, or heart disease.

This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. The use of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these side effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require mental alertness until you are capable of performing them safely.

This medication may heighten your sensitivity to sunlight. Reduce your exposure to sunlight, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and wear protective clothing and sunscreen when outside. Contact your physician immediately if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.

This medication is not intended for use by women, particularly during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as it may harm an unborn or breastfeeding baby. Male patients and their female partners must use reliable forms of birth control throughout treatment with bicalutamide and for 130 days afterward since this medication may damage sperm.
