What is Actos?

Pioglitazone is Actos’ generic name. It is a type of drug that belongs to thiazolidinedione (also known as glitazones) medication. It is an anti-diabetic medicine that aids in treating elevated blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Actos mechanism of action works by reducing insulin resistance in the periphery and liver while improving insulin sensitivity in muscles, resulting in lower circulating insulin levels.

Furthermore, it contains pioglitazone, an agonist for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR). PPAR is found in tissues (adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and the liver) that are sensitive to insulin. When PPAR is activated, nuclear receptors regulate the production of genes responsive to insulin that is involved in glucose and lipid metabolic control.

Along with this medication, a healthy diet and exercise should be part of an adjunct therapy to control blood sugar levels. Also, this drug can be used alone or combined with some other drugs.

Actos Dosage

The difference in dosage is dependent on your current health condition, treatments you are undergoing, age, and tolerance to the therapy. There are three strengths available: 15 mg, 30 mg, and 45 mg per tablet.

If you don’t have heart failure, the recommended dose is 15 mg or 30 mg per tablet once a day, but if you have congestive heart failure, it should be a 15 mg pill. For maintenance, start with 15 mg per tablet a day. This is then gradually increased to 45 mg based on your doctor’s assessment of your hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) results.

Remember, do not alter your pioglitazone dosage, talk to your doctor first before changing anything.

How to use Actos?

Before beginning Actos therapy, be sure to read all of the instructions in the leaflet carefully. Follow all of the recommendations on the medicine label or as directed by your doctor. If there is anything about this medication that you do not understand, consult your doctor.

Actos medication is administered orally once daily, with or without food. Without chewing or crushing the tablet, swallow it whole.

Take it regularly to avoid skipping a dose, and writing a note in your calendar may help you remember not to miss a pill. If ever you missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is already nearing your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.

Keep in mind that you should not take more than what is prescribed to avoid experiencing unwanted side effects from the drug.

Remember that this is not a comprehensive list of Actos’ health effects. Other serious side effects are possible.

  • Make sure you’ve fully disclosed your medical history to your doctor, especially if you have uncontrolled heart disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, bladder cancer, liver difficulties, or vision problems, as this can aggravate your present medical condition.
  • If you are allergic to pioglitazone or any of its components, do not use this medication. When using this medication, keep a watch out for any allergic reactions, such as rashes, hives, swelling of the face and lips, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing. You should seek medical assistance as soon as you notice these signs and symptoms.
  • When using pioglitazone, keep a keen watch on your blood sugar levels. Call your doctor immediately if you experience low blood sugar symptoms, such as sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet. Also, if you experience effects of high blood sugar, including thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, or fruity breath odor.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol because it has the effect of lowering your blood sugar levels and may interfere with the effectiveness of pioglitazone.
  • Actos may cause drug interaction with other medications and supplements, causing adverse effects. Inform your doctor about your medications and vitamins.
