Aptiom for Seizures

This medication is used to treat and prevent certain types of seizures called focal seizures. Aptiom tablet uses the active ingredient eslicarbazepine to decrease symptoms of focal onset seizure.

Mechanism of Action

Scientists aren’t yet sure exactly how eslicarbazepine works. It is thought to act on certain cell membranes called ion channels that allow electrical signals to communicate via nerve impulses. Anticonvulsants such as Aptiom can be used alone or with other medications to decrease the frequency and/or severity of focal seizures.

Who Should Not Use Aptiom?

Do not use this medication without your doctor’s guidance if you have a history involving past kidney disease, liver disease, or mineral imbalances. Always communicate your medical history with your doctor before using a prescription drug in order to minimize the risk of adverse side effects.

If you have a hypersensitivity to eslicarbazepine or any non-active ingredient used to make Aptiom, then you should not use this medication under any circumstance. Allergic reactions are life-threatening if they cause swelling in the mouth or throat that leads to difficulty breathing.

Do not operate heavy machinery or drive for long periods when using this medication. Side effects of Aptiom include dizziness and blurry vision; either of which can make it difficult to maintain alertness. Alcohol and cannabis can make these effects more pronounced. Refrain from partaking in dangerous activities until you are aware of how this medication affects you.

If you are pregnant and your doctor has prescribed Aptiom, please be aware that they have judged that the benefit of taking this medication will be greater than the risk of causing fetal harm. It’s not fully known if this medication passes into breast milk or will cause harm to unborn children, but there is little indication that there is a high risk for danger.

Aptiom Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Sleepiness
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting

Your doctor can help reduce side effects if you find they are too bothersome or if they do not go away. Call your doctor immediately if you experience any extreme or serious side effects, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Difficulty performing simple tasks like walking
  • Feeling sleepy all the time
  • Loss of attention span
  • Jaundice
  • Vision problems
  • Stomach pain
  • Dark urine
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea/vomiting

Antiepileptic drugs can cause suicidal thoughts in some rare cases. Mental disorders such as suicidal ideation are serious conditions that require help and attention. Monitor your mood and talk to your doctor immediately if you have thoughts about suicide, self-harm, or if you have any new or worsening depression, irritability, anxiety, panic attacks, restlessness, anger management issues, or insomnia; or if you are acting in uncharacteristic ways including violent behavior, agitation, and impulsive behavior.

Aptiom Dosage

The following strengths are available for this medication:

  • Aptiom 400 mg tablets
  • Aptiom 600 mg tablets
  • Aptiom 800 mg tablets

Dosing Instructions:

Take this medication as instructed by your doctor. You may take this medication with or without food, and it is best to take it at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the normal time if it’s too late. You may swallow these tablets whole or crush them. Do not exceed the dosage given to you by your doctor, and do not stop taking Aptiom suddenly without talking to your doctor first.

Most people are given a dosage of 400 mg once per day to begin treatment with Aptiom. Your dosage may depend on a variety of factors, including the type and severity of seizures that you have. 800 mg and 600 mg strengths are sometimes required to effectively deal with some cases. It may also be necessary to take less of this medication if there are external factors present that may influence the efficacy of this drug. For example, the use of other medications or medical histories involving problems of the kidneys or liver may be a reason to take less Aptiom.

You should always tell your doctor your full medical history before using Aptiom and follow their instructions and guidelines for dosing completely.

Store this medication between 20°C and 25°C (68°F-77°F). These tablets should be kept safe from exposure to heat, light, and moisture.

Store away from the bathroom and the refrigerator. As with other medications, keep them in a secure location out of sight and reach of young children and pets.

Do not take any medications that are past their printed expiration date. If you have expired medications, you should dispose of them at your local pharmacist instead of throwing them out.
