Betagan Uses

Betagan is an ophthalmic beta-blocker medication. Its generic name is levobunolol HCl. It is prescribed to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) of patients who suffer from open-angle glaucoma.

Levobunolol HCl can be used as a stand-alone drug or combined with other medications as advised by your healthcare practitioner.

How does Betagan work?

In patients suffering from glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is present. It happens because of the abnormality between the production and elimination in the normal fluid cycle in your eyes called aqueous humor. This imbalance creates high pressure inside the eye that can damage your optic nerve; as a result, glaucoma occurs.

If used correctly, this drug acts as a beta-blocker that constricts the blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries). This constriction reduces the amount of fluid produced in the eyes. As a result, it re-balances the aqueous humor and maintains the intraocular pressure at a healthy level.

Dosage of Betagan

The number of times and the amount you are going to take Betagan will depend on the evaluation of your healthcare provider. It will depend on your current condition, age, and response to treatment. This eye drop is available in a 0.50 percent concentration.

The recommended daily dose for this eye medication is one to two drops in the affected eye. It can be taken twice a day by people with severe glaucoma.

Do not exceed and alter your dosage without consulting your doctor first. Doing so may increase the likelihood of having side effects.

Best way to use Betagan

To begin, thoroughly read all medication instructions and information. Use the medication precisely as instructed. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any queries or are unsure how to administer this eye drop.

Before administering this medication, wash your hands. Make sure that the dropper is clean before putting it in your eyes.

When applying these eye drops, find your most comfortable position. Begin by tilting your head backward. Pull the lower lid down gently to create a pocket, then look up. Make sure the dropper does not come into contact with your eyes. Squeeze one drop of Betagan into the pocket slowly and close your eyes for at least three minutes.

You can press the inside corner of your eye while your eyes are closed to avoid the drops from entering your throat. Do not blink or wipe your eyes. After applying the medication, make sure to wash your hands.

If you need to use more than one drop, repeat these steps and wait five minutes before administering the next drop. Avoid taking this drug into the mouth.

  • Inform your doctor if you are using an orally administered beta-adrenergic blocking drug or herbal supplements because they may interact with levobunolol HCl.
  • Do not use this medication if you are allergic to levobunolol HCl or other ingredients. Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions such as rashes, hives, swelling of the face and lips, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing when taking this drug. • Remove contact lenses before administering these eye drops. This medication can permanently stain your lenses. Wait for at least 15 minutes before putting it back.
