Drug Description:

This medicine is used alone or with other medications to control certain types of seizures, to relieve pain in patients with nerve pain in the face, jaw, tongue, and throat, and to treat bipolar disorders. Store below 77 degrees F. Protect from light and moisture. How much medicine you take/give and how often you take/give it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take or give this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Swallow tablets whole with a little liquid during or after a meal or as directed by your health care provider. Do not chew the tablets. This medicine is not to be used to relieve headaches or minor pains in the face. Contact your doctor at once if any of the following symptoms occur while taking this medicine: Seizures, fever, sore throat, rash, ulcers in the mouth, easy bruising, bleeding, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Stop taking or giving this medicine and contact your health care provider at once if a serious skin reaction (flushing; rash; hives; itching; changes in skin color; acne; purple patches under the skin; hair loss; excessive sweating) occurs. Contact your health care provider at once if any of the following occur: Drowsiness; headache; unsteadiness on the feet; double vision; nausea; vomiting. Birth control pills may not be as effective while taking this medicine. Breakthrough bleeding and unintended pregnancies have occurred. Talk with your health care provider about alternative or back-up methods of birth control. Contact your doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs. Serious birth defects have occurred in children born to women taking these kinds of medicines. This medicine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine. This medicine may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Do not take or give this medicine if you and/or your child are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days. If you are uncertain whether your other medicines contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Lab tests and eye exams may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking or giving this medication. Do not change the dose or stop taking/giving this medicine without checking with your doctor. Stopping this medicine suddenly may cause your symptoms to increase. Do not take or give more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken or given too much of this medicine. Do not take or give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take or give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take/give this medicine if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine you and/or your child have liver disease you and/or your child have a history of bone marrow depression you and/or your child have a history of the blood disorder porphyria or other serious blood disord

Contra Indication:

Do not take/give this medicine if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine you and/or your child have liver disease you and/or your child have a history of bone marrow depression you and/or your child have a history of the blood disorder porphyria or other serious blood disorders you and/or your child have heart block if you and/or your child are taking amitriptyline, trimipramine, imipramine, or similar medications you and/or your child are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days

Severe Side Effects:

Most severe:  Severe allergic reaction (tightness in the chest; difficulty breathing; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blood disorder (fever, sore throat, rash, ulcers in the mouth, easy bruising, bleeding); yellowing of the skin or eyes; severe skin reaction (flushing; rash; hives; itching; changes in skin color; acne; purple patches under the skin; hair loss; excessive sweating); seizures; involuntary muscle movements; hallucinations; aggressive behavior; bizarre behavior; difficulty breathing; pneumonia; inflammation of the pancreas (stomach tenderness; nausea; vomiting; fever; increased pulse rate).
