Description

Indications

The combination of sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and anhydrous citric acid is indicated for use in adults and children aged 9 years and above to facilitate the emptying of the colon prior to a colonoscopy.

Sodium picosulfate belongs to the class of drugs known as stimulant laxatives, while magnesium oxide and anhydrous citric acid combine to form magnesium citrate, which belongs to the class of drugs known as osmotic laxatives. These drugs exert their effects by inducing watery diarrhea to clear out stool from the colon. This enables the physician to obtain a clear view of the colon walls during the colonoscopy procedure.

Uses and Dosage

Adhere to any dietary instructions provided by your physician. Typically, only clear liquids are allowed the day prior to your procedure. Avoid consuming milk, dairy products, red or dark-colored liquids, and alcohol. To prevent dehydration, consume as much clear liquid as possible before, during, and after taking the medication. Follow your doctor’s advice on which types of clear liquids to consume.

Administer this product in two separate doses, following your physician’s guidance on when to take each dose. The dose prescribed will be based on your medical condition and age.

This product is available in either a powder form that needs to be mixed with water or a pre-mixed liquid in bottles. Carefully follow the instructions provided for your specific product. If you are using the powder packets, mix each dose with 5 ounces/150 milliliters of cold water, stirring well until the powder is completely dissolved (usually 2 to 3 minutes). Drink the entire mixture.

In the event of bloating or stomach/abdominal pain after taking the product, taking a break from consuming clear liquids or waiting a longer period between each dose may be helpful.

Watery bowel movements typically commence 2 to 4 hours after ingesting the medication, indicating that it is working as intended. Ensure that you have access to a toilet until the medication’s effects have worn off.

Do not take any oral medication one hour before consuming this product, as it may impact the absorption of the medication. Certain medications, such as digoxin, iron, tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin, chlorpromazine, and penicillamine, should not be taken 2 hours before or 6 hours after ingesting this product.
