Description

Indications

Pyrimethamine is administered in conjunction with a sulfonamide, such as sulfadoxine, for the treatment of toxoplasmosis. It is classified as an antiprotozoal pharmaceutical agent. Its mechanism of action involves the eradication or inhibition of the growth of the Toxoplasma gondii parasite.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally, typically once or twice daily, as instructed by your doctor. Taking it with food can help alleviate feelings of nausea and vomiting. Should vomiting become severe or persist, your doctor may consider adjusting your dosage or advising you to discontinue the medication.

Your doctor will prescribe folic/folinic acid to counteract any potential blood-related issues arising from pyrimethamine usage. Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions in this regard. Consume an ample amount of fluids to prevent kidney complications if you are concurrently taking a “sulfa” medication alongside pyrimethamine.

To achieve optimal results, maintain a consistent level of the drug in your body. Establish a routine by taking them at the same time(s) each day to help with remembering.

The dosage of this medication will be determined based on the specific type of infection, your medical condition, age, and response to treatment. The duration of your treatment will depend on the nature of your infection. Your doctor will carefully adjust your dose to effectively address the infection while minimizing the risk of serious side effects.

Under no circumstances should you exceed or decrease the prescribed dosage of this medication. Unless directed by your doctor, do not discontinue the medication before completing the prescribed course, even if you start feeling better. Skipping doses or altering your dosage without obtaining approval from your doctor may result in increased parasite levels, rendering the infection more challenging to treat (resistant), or exacerbating side effects.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens over time.

Caution

Prior to initiating pyrimethamine treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, including any hypersensitivity to pyrimethamine or other substances. Inactive ingredients present in the product may provoke allergic reactions or other complications.

Before commencing the use of this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of seizures, kidney or liver problems, megaloblastic anemia resulting from low blood folate levels, inadequate folic acid levels due to other conditions, low red or white blood cell counts, or a reduced platelet count affecting blood clotting.

During pregnancy, the use of this medication should only be considered if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor. Adequate folate levels are highly important during pregnancy, and your doctor will prescribe folic/folinic acid to prevent folate deficiency.
