Drug Description:
This vaccine is used for prevention of cholera infections and travellers’ diarrhea in adults and children two years of age and older. It is recommended for people traveling to areas with a high risk of cholera or travellers’ diarrhea.Store at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets.How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist. For the prevention of cholera: Adults and children over 6 years of age should receive two doses of the vaccine at least one week apart and no more than 6 weeks apart. A single booster dose is given after two years. Children from 2 to 6 years of age should receive three doses, 1 to 6 weeks apart. A single booster dose is given after 6 months. For the prevention of travellers diarrhea: Adults and children 2 years of age and over should receive two doses, 1 to 6 weeks apart. A booster dose should be given every three months if there is continuing risk of infection. The vaccine must be taken by mouth, not injected. Avoid food and drink for one hour before and after taking the vaccine. To mix the vaccine: First dissolve the white granules (from the sachet) in a glass of water (approximately 150 mL or 5 oz.). Do not use juice or a carbonated beverage. Shake the vaccine liquid and add it to the glass. Mix well and drink as soon as possible after mixing (within 2 hours if stored at room temperature). For children aged 2 to 6 years, half of the water plus sodium hydrogen carbonate mixture should be thrown away before the vaccine liquid is added (the entire volume of the vaccine liquid should be added). Before mixing, the vaccine should be stored in the fridge. The vaccine may be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks on one occasion only.
