Indications
Bisacodyl is in a class of medications called stimulant laxatives. This medication is indicated for short-term treatment of constipation and bowel evacuation before surgery or medical procedures. It functions by stimulating intestinal activity and promoting bowel movement.
Uses and Dosage
Bisacodyl is available in tablet form for oral administration. It is typically taken in the evening, prior to the desired bowel movement, and typically produces a bowel movement within a 6 to 12 hour timeframe. Do not exceed daily usage of bisacodyl or use for more than one week without first consulting a physician.
Carefully follow the instructions provided on the product packaging or as indicated on your prescription label. If there are any unclear instructions, seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist. The continuous and frequent use of bisacodyl may result in the development of a dependence on laxatives and the reduction of normal bowel activity. In the event that a regular bowel movement is not achieved after taking bisacodyl, refrain from taking any further medication and seek medical advice.
The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should not be divided, chewed, or crushed. Avoid consuming dairy products within one hour of taking bisacodyl.
Side Effects
Adverse reactions that may be associated with the use of dulcolax include:
- stomach pain or discomfort
- feeling light-headed
- rectal burning
Stop using dulcolax and call your doctor at once if you have:
- rectal bleeding
- no bowel movement after using dulcolax
Caution
Before taking bisacodyl, inform your healthcare provider of any allergies, including potential allergies to inactive ingredients in the product. Provide a complete medical history, particularly in regards to any history of appendicitis, sudden or persistent changes in bowel habits lasting over 2 weeks, rectal bleeding, or intestinal blockage.
Prior to undergoing any surgical procedure, inform your healthcare provider of all current medications, including prescription, nonprescription, and herbal products.
If you are taking antacids, wait at least 1 hour before taking bisacodyl.
If you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, inform your doctor prior to using bisacodyl. Long-term use during pregnancy is not recommended and further guidance should be sought from your healthcare provider.

How long does it take for Dulcolax to kick in?
It will take between 10-60 minutes to work and therefore should preferably be used in the morning. It will usually have its effect within 30 minutes.
