Drug Description:

This medicine is used to relieve stuffy nose and chest congestion associated with respiratory tract infections, sinus inflammation, sore throat, bronchitis, and asthma. It is also used to loosen and thin mucus and make coughs more productive. Store at controlled room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F). Keep in a tight, light-resistant container. How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. The tablets may be broken in half without affecting the release of the medication. Take or give this medicine with food, water, or milk to minimize stomach upset. Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken a medicine to treat depression or high blood pressure within the last 2 weeks. Do not use this medicine for persistent or chronic cough that is due to smoking or breathing problems, such as asthma, or emphysema, or if the cough is accompanied by a lot of mucus unless directed by a health care provider. A cough that won’t go away could be a sign of a serious condition. This medicine may cause dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Diabetes patients — This medicine may affect your blood sugar level. Your doctor may need to change the amount of diabetes medicine you are taking. Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 2 weeks. If you are uncertain whether your other medications contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking with your health care provider. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not use more medicine than prescribed unless you are told to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of this medicine. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your health care provider. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications you have severe high blood pressure you have severe heart disease you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days you are pregnant or breastfeeding Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are planning to become pregnant if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have high blood pressure if you have heart disease if you have diabetes if you have increased pressure in the eye if you have an overactive thyroid gland if you have difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland if you have any other medical condition Most severe: Convulsions; lightheadedness; fast heartbeat; pounding in the chest; difficulty breathing; hallucinations; irregular heart rhythm. Most common: Headache; dizziness; nausea. Other: Fear; anxiety; nervousness; restlessness; shakiness or trembling; weakness; pale skin; difficulty urinating; sleeplessness.
