This medication consists of a combination of two active ingredients: abacavir and lamivudine. It is administered in conjunction with other antiretroviral medications to effectively manage HIV infection. The primary purpose of this medication is to reduce the viral load of HIV within the body, thereby enhancing the functionality of the immune system. Consequently, the likelihood of experiencing complications related to HIV is diminished, leading to an overall improvement in the individual’s quality of life. Both abacavir and lamivudine are categorized as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Abacavir/lamivudine does not result in a complete eradication of HIV; rather, it serves as a means of managing the infection.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally, either with or without food, as per your doctor’s guidance, usually once daily.
This combination product containing fixed doses of abacavir and lamivudine should only be employed if your doctor has determined that the prescribed doses of both medications are appropriate for your specific needs.
In the event that you discontinue the usage of any medication containing abacavir, even for a brief period, and subsequently resume its administration, your likelihood of experiencing a severe allergic reaction, which could potentially be life-threatening, increases. Ensure that you have a sufficient supply of this medication by refilling it before it is depleted. Refrain from discontinuing the treatment regimen unless specifically instructed to do so by your doctor. Should you need to restart any medication containing abacavir, consult your doctor or pharmacist and ensure ready access to medical care.
It is of utmost importance to strictly adhere to the prescribed regimen of this medication (as well as other HIV medications) as directed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses, alter the prescribed dosage, increase the frequency of intake beyond the prescribed amount, or abruptly discontinue the medication (or any other HIV medicines) without explicit instructions from your doctor. Failure to comply with the prescribed regimen or making unauthorized changes may result in an increase in viral load, rendering the infection more difficult to manage (developing resistance), or exacerbating side effects.
To maximize the efficacy of the medication, take it at evenly spaced intervals. Establish a consistent routine by taking the medication at the same time each day to assist with adherence and aid in remembering the dosing schedule.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- abnormal dreams
- burning feeling in the chest or stomach
- fear or nervousness
- feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
- lightheadedness
- sensation of spinning
- severe and throbbing headache
- stomach upset
- tenderness in the stomach area
- trouble sleeping
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- cough
- diarrhea
- fever
- headache
- nausea
- numbness or tingling of the face, feet, or hands
- pain in the joints
- pain in the muscles
- skin rash
- sore throat
- stomach pain
- swelling of the feet or lower legs
- unusual feeling of discomfort or illness
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- vomiting
Caution
Prior to initiating treatment with abacavir/lamivudine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to either of these drugs or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can elicit allergic reactions or other complications.
Before commencing the use of this medication, provide your doctor or pharmacist with your complete medical history, particularly highlighting any kidney problems, liver issues, pancreatic ailments, or a history of alcohol consumption.
Abacavir usage may potentially increase the risk of experiencing a heart attack. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits associated with the treatment, as well as strategies to mitigate the risk of heart disease. Inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing heart problems, if you are a smoker, or if you have any other conditions that elevate your susceptibility to heart disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol levels.
This medication may induce dizziness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this dizziness. Refrain from operating machinery, driving, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can safely do so.
Children may exhibit heightened sensitivity to the side effects of this medication, particularly pancreatitis. Carefully inform your doctor if you are pregnant prior to commencing the use of this medication. Treatment can significantly reduce the risk of transmitting HIV infection to your baby. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
As this medication is excreted into breast milk and breast milk can transmit HIV, refrain from breastfeeding while using this medication.
