Glyset medication is a drug used with diet and exercise to help persons with type 2 diabetes regulate their blood sugar levels.
Glyset prevents carbs (sugar) from being digested in your body. This reduces the quantity of sugar that enters your bloodstream after a meal and avoids hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

Dosage
- This medication’s dose should be customized based on efficacy and tolerance, but not to exceed the maximum suggested dosage of 100 mg three times per day.
- Take this three times a day, at the start of each large meal.
- Starting with Glyset 25 mg, the dosage should be gradually raised to decrease gastrointestinal side effects and determine the minimal amount necessary for optimal glycemic control of the patient.
Direction
- Each dosage should be taken with the first bite of a substantial meal.
- Use a dextrose-based sugar source to immediately address low blood sugar when taking Glyset. Because this prescription can limit the effect of sucrose in the body, a sugar source based on sucrose may not function. Cane sugar, candy, table sugar, chocolate, syrup, and non-diet soda or other sweetened meals are all sucrose-based sugar sources.
Glyset Side Effects
The following are some of the most common negative effects:
- Pain in the stomach
- Diarrhea;
- A minor rash
- Gas,
- Upset stomach,
- Iron deficiency anemia in the early part of treatment as the body adjusts to this drug, but this usually improves over time.
Caution
- Because this is designed to inhibit the breakdown of table sugar, if your blood sugar lowers, you should take glucose or dextrose instead of sugar or fruit to treat hypoglycemia. Make track of your blood sugar levels and keep a record to show your doctor if anything needs to be addressed. Do not start or stop taking any other medications without consulting your doctor, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can strike anybody with diabetes. Headache, hunger, perspiration, irritability, dizziness, nausea, high heart rate, and feeling shaky are some of the symptoms.
- If you have inflammatory bowel disease (UC, Crohn’s), a blockage in your intestines, a persistent intestinal problem, or a stomach disorder generating excess gas, you should not take this. If you have diabetic ketoacidosis, you should not use this medication.
