This medication is a combination of two active ingredients: empagliflozin and linagliptin. It is prescribed along with a proper diet and exercise regimen to effectively manage high blood sugar levels in individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Empagliflozin operates by enhancing the elimination of sugar by the kidneys, while linagliptin functions by elevating the levels of natural substances known as incretins. These incretins aid in blood sugar control by promoting insulin release, particularly after a meal.
By maintaining control over elevated blood sugar, this treatment helps prevent potential complications such as kidney damage, vision impairment, nerve disorders, limb loss, and sexual function issues. Proper diabetes control can also reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes.
Uses and Dosage
Empagliflozin and linagliptin can be taken with or without food and at any time during the day as long as you maintain a consistent daily schedule.
Swallow the tablet whole with a beverage, and do not crush or chew the tablets.
The appropriate dose of this medication can vary based on factors such as body weight, other medical conditions, and concurrent medications. If your doctor has recommended a different dose than the ones listed here, do not alter your intake without consulting them.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular dosing schedule. If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and stick to your regular schedule. Avoid taking a double dose to compensate for a missed one, and never consume two doses within the same day. If you are unsure about what to do after missing a dose, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Store this medication at room temperature, shielded from light and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater or household garbage. Consult your pharmacist regarding the proper disposal of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- symptoms of a urinary tract infection
- tremor
- weakness
- pain, redness, or swelling in and around the anus or genitals
Caution
Prior to taking this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to empagliflozin or linagliptin, or if you have any other allergies. Be aware that this product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
Before using this medication, discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have kidney disease (such as undergoing dialysis), a history of dehydration, pancreatitis, alcohol use/abuse, gallstones, low blood pressure, heart failure, high cholesterol, or yeast infections in the vagina or penis.
Due to the possibility of experiencing blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness as a result of extremely low or high blood sugar, avoid driving, using machinery, or engaging in activities that demand alertness or clear vision until you are confident in your ability to perform such tasks safely.
While taking this medication, limit alcohol consumption, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar and elevated ketone levels.
Managing blood sugar may be more challenging during times of stress, such as fever, infection, injury, or surgery. Similarly, eating less or being unable to eat due to illness can lead to high ketone levels while on this medication. Consult your doctor, as this situation may necessitate changes in your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar and ketone testing.
Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly kidney problems, dehydration, dizziness, and low blood pressure.
During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly needed, and discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
Pregnancy may cause or worsen diabetes. Develop a plan with your doctor to manage your blood sugar while pregnant, and your doctor may adjust your diabetes treatment during pregnancy, including diet and medications such as insulin.
The passage of this drug into breast milk is not fully understood. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
