Description

Indications

Nicotine polacrilex facilitates smoking cessation by substituting the nicotine found in cigarettes. Nicotine is a pivotal component of cigarette dependency, and discontinuing smoking results in a rapid reduction of nicotine levels, leading to withdrawal symptoms such as tobacco cravings, nervousness, irritability, headache, weight gain, and impaired concentration. Achieving cessation is a challenging endeavor, and the likelihood of success is highest when a person is prepared and has committed to quitting. Nicotine replacement products constitute a crucial component of a comprehensive smoking cessation program that involves behavioral modification, counseling, and supportive interventions.

Uses and Dosage

Nicotine gum is intended for oral use as a chewing gum and must not be swallowed. Carefully follow the directions on the package label, and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist regarding any unclear instructions.

Use nicotine gum precisely as directed, without using more or less of it or using it more frequently than prescribed on the package label or as recommended by your physician.

If you consume your first cigarette over 30 minutes after waking up, opt for the 2-mg gum. Individuals who smoke their first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up should choose the 4-mg gum. During the first six weeks, nicotine gum may be used regularly by chewing one piece every one to two hours, followed by one piece every two to four hours for three weeks, and then one piece every four to eight hours for an additional three weeks. If you experience intense or frequent cravings, you may chew a second piece of gum within one hour. To increase your chances of quitting smoking, chew at least nine pieces of nicotine gum each day for the first six weeks.

Chew nicotine gum slowly until you can perceive the nicotine or feel a slight tingling sensation in your mouth. Stop chewing and position (park) the chewing gum between your cheek and gum when the tingling sensation becomes noticeable. After approximately one minute when the tingling sensation has almost disappeared, recommence chewing and repeat the process for about 30 minutes. Do not consume food or drinks 15 minutes before and while chewing nicotine gum.

Avoid chewing nicotine gum too quickly, consuming more than one piece of gum at a time, or chewing one piece of gum too soon after another. Continuously chewing one piece of gum after another may result in side effects such as hiccups, heartburn, nausea, and others. Do not consume more than 24 pieces of gum daily.

After 12 weeks of use, discontinue the use of nicotine gum. If you continue to feel the need to use nicotine gum after 12 weeks, consult your physician.

FAQ

Why can’t you drink or eat with Nicorette?

Eating or drinking even mildly acidic foods and beverages directly before using or while using Nicorette inhibits nicotine absorption into your bloodstream.

How many cigarettes is 2mg of nicotine gum?

In general, if the patient smokes 20 or less cigarettes a day, 2mg nicotine gum is indicated. If more than 20 cigarettes per day are smoked, 4mg nicotine gum will be needed to meet the withdrawal of the high serum nicotine levels from heavy smoking.
