Indications

Elagolix is utilized for the management of pain associated with endometriosis, a gynecological condition characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, leading to symptoms such as infertility, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and abnormal uterine bleeding.

Elagolix belongs to the class of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonists, and exerts its therapeutic effects by reducing the levels of specific hormones in the body.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to initiating this medication, your physician may conduct a pregnancy test or instruct you to commence treatment within 7 days of the onset of your menstrual period to confirm that you are not pregnant.

Take this medication orally, with or without food, as prescribed by your physician, usually once or twice daily. The dosage and duration of treatment will be determined based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and concurrent use of other medications.

To mitigate the risk of bone loss, this medication is typically prescribed for a duration of up to 6 months or up to 24 months, as advised by your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

Before using this medication, provide your doctor or pharmacist with your complete medical history, particularly if you have a history of liver problems, bone loss (osteoporosis), or mental/mood disorders such as depression.

Elagolix must not be used during pregnancy as it may pose harm to an unborn baby. Inquire about reliable non-hormonal methods of birth control, such as condoms or spermicide, while using this medication and for 4 weeks after discontinuing treatment.

Due to the potential impact of this medication on menstruation, it may be more challenging to discern if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you may be pregnant or become pregnant while on this medication, promptly notify your doctor.

The passage of this medication into breast milk is not well understood. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while taking elagolix.
