Drug Description:

This medicine is used to prevent pregnancy.Store at room temperature (approximately 77 degrees F).How much medicine you are given and how often it is given depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are given, talk with your health care provider. Contact your health care provider if any of the following side effects occur while using this medicine: Sharp chest pain; coughing up blood; sudden shortness of breath; pain in the groin or calf; crushing chest pain or heaviness in the chest; missed menstrual period or suspected pregnancy; severe headache or vomiting; dizziness; fainting; vision or speech disturbances; weakness or numbness in the arm or leg; breast lumps; severe pain or tenderness in the stomach area; yellowing of the skin or eyes accompanied by fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, dark-colored urine, or light-colored bowel movements; severe depression; sudden complete or partial loss of vision; difficulty sleeping; weakness; lack of energy; fatigue; mood changes; unusually heavy vaginal bleeding. Carefully read the patient insert available with the product for specific dosing and missed dose instructions. Your doctor or health care provider will take a medical and family history and examine you before prescribing this medicine. The physical exam may be delayed to another time if you request it and your doctor believes that it is good medical practice to postpone it. You should be reexamined at least once a year while taking oral contraceptives. Take exactly at intervals of not greater than 24 hours. Take regularly with a meal or at bedtime. Strictly adhere to the dosage schedule for maximum effectiveness. Notify your doctor if you miss 2 consecutive menstrual periods. Use of this medicine should be discontinued until pregnancy is ruled out. If you experience vomiting or diarrhea, this medicine may not be as effective. Use a backup contraceptive method (eg, condoms, spermicide) until you speak with your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine may cause spotting, breakthrough bleeding, or nausea, especially during the first months of therapy. If it continues past the second month, notify your doctor. If you have trouble remembering to take this medicine, talk with your health care provider about how to make pill taking easier or about using another method of birth control. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious heart problems from the use of this medicine. The risk increases with age and with heavy smoking (15 or more cigarettes a day) and increases further in women older than 35 years of age. If you develop changes in vision or lens tolerance, contact your eye-care specialist. Consider temporarily or permanently stopping contact lens wear. Diabetic patients – This medicine may cause decreased glucose tolerance. Some of these products may contain the dye tartrazine (FD&C Yellow No. 5), which can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine does not protect against HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS) or other sexually transmitted diseases. This medicine may cause dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not take over-the-counter or prescription medications or dietary supplements without talking with your health care provider. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine or change the dose unless advised to do so by your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. Women who use this medicine should not smoke. Smoking increases the risk of serious heart problems when used along with birth control pills. There are two different types of birth-control pills: Combination pills and progestin-only pills (POPs). The combination pills contain mixtures of the hormones estrogen and progestin. They appear to prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucous to inhibit sperm penetration of an egg should one be released, and change the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg should fertilization occur.
