Drug Description:

This medicine is used for the treatment of moderate to severe depression with moderate to severe anxiety. It is also used to treat anxiety due to other mental disorders. Store at controlled room temperature (36 to 77 degrees F). Keep tightly closed. Protect from light and moisture. How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not drink alcohol or take other mental depressants (eg, antihistamines, narcotics) while taking this medicine. This medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a potentially deadly syndrome associated with this medicine. Talk with your doctor if the following symptoms develop: Increased body heat; muscle rigidity; altered mental state (eg, confusion, withdrawal, unresponsiveness); irregular pulse and blood pressure; increased heart rate; sweating. Involuntary and uncontrollable movements may develop in patients treated with this medicine. It occurs most often in the elderly; the risk of the symptoms becoming permanent increases with long-term use and with high doses. However, it is possible to develop these symptoms after short-term treatment at low doses. This syndrome is normally identified by rhythmical, involuntary movements of the tongue, face, mouth,, or jaw (eg, tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements), sometimes with involuntary movements of the arms or legs. Small worm-like movements of the tongue may be an early sign of the syndrome. If the medicine is stopped at this time, the syndrome may not develop. There is no known treatment of this syndrome, although it may stop, either partially or completely, if this medicine is withdrawn. Do not use this medicine in combination with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping treatment with an MAO inhibitor. After stopping this medicine, wait at least 14 days before starting an MAO inhibitor. This medicine may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Do not expose yourself for long periods of time to the sun. Wear sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Talk with your doctor if you notice a rise in body temperature (fever). This may suggest that you cannot tolerate this medicine. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications you have a blood disorder you are recovering from a recent heart attack you have a decreased ability to fight infection in addition to a lack of energy and anemia you have brain or liver damage you are currently taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or have taken them within the past 14 days you are taking elective surgery Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have a history of addiction to other medicines if you have ever tried or seriously considered suicide if you are undergoing electroshock thera

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications you have a blood disorder you are recovering from a recent heart attack you have a decreased ability to fight infection in addition to a lack of energy and anemia you have brain or liver damage you are currently taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or have taken them within the past 14 days you are taking elective surgery

Severe Side Effects:

Most severe: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome; involuntary and uncontrollable movements.

Common Side Effects:

Most common: Constipation; loss of appetite; drowsiness; dizziness; vivid dreams; confusion; tremor; unexplained tiredness; restlessness; lethargy; dry mouth; increased body temperature; urinary retention; blurred vision; abnormal skin color; changes in blood pressure.

Other Side Effects:

Sensitivity to sunlight. This medicine may be habit-forming. Withdrawal symptoms (such as convulsions, tremor, stomach and muscle cramps, vomiting, and sweating) may occur in patients who suddenly stop taking this medicine. Your doctor will gradually reduce the amount of this medicine.
