Indications

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant that works by restoring the balance of natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adult patients.

The exact mechanism of action of mirtazapine is not entirely known. It is believed to enhance the intercommunication between nerve cells in the central nervous system and/or to reestablish the chemical balance in the brain, thereby improving the mood and overall sense of well-being in patients suffering from depression.

Uses and Dosage

Mirtazapine is available in both tablet and disintegrating tablet form for oral consumption. It is typically taken once daily, just before bedtime, and may be taken with or without food. Follow the instructions on the prescription label precisely and to seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist if any aspect is unclear.

The disintegrating tablet should be removed from the blister packaging using dry hands and placed directly on the tongue where it will dissolve without the need for water. Once removed from the packaging, the tablet should be consumed immediately as it cannot be stored.

It may take several weeks or longer to experience the full benefits of mirtazapine. Continue taking the medication even if you feel well, and to never discontinue use without first consulting your doctor. Your doctor may gradually decrease your dosage in the event that you need to stop taking mirtazapine.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

• constipation
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• dry mouth
• increased appetite
• weight gain
• abnormal dreams

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

• fast or irregular heartbeat
• severe dizziness or fainting
• eye pain, swelling, or redness
• widened pupils
• vision changes, such as seeing rainbows around lights at night or blurred vision.

Caution

Avoid the use of mirtazapine if you are currently taking Tryptophan.

Usage of this medication should be avoided if you have used a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 14 days, such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, among others.

When starting an antidepressant, some individuals may experience thoughts of suicide. Regularly consult with your healthcare provider while using mirtazapine. Your family and caregivers should also be vigilant of any changes in your mood or symptoms.

In the event that you experience new or worsening symptoms, such as mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, impulsiveness, irritability, agitation, hostility, aggressiveness, restlessness, hyperactivity (mentally or physically), increased depression, or thoughts of suicide or self-harm, promptly report them to your doctor.

Please note that it may take several weeks for symptoms to improve. Continue taking the medication as directed and inform your doctor if there is no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment.

Consuming alcohol while taking mirtazapine may enhance some of its side effects. Mirtazapine may impact your ability to think and react. Please exercise caution when driving or engaging in activities that require alertness.

If you wish to discontinue the use of mirtazapine, consult with your doctor before doing so. Abruptly stopping mirtazapine can be harmful.

FAQ

Is Remeron very sedating?

Although sedation is expected at low doses, it is usually most noticeable in the first few weeks of therapy and diminishes with continued treatment.

How long should you stay on Remeron?

Remeron is generally safe to take for a long time. There do not seem to be any lasting harmful effects from taking it for many months or years.
