Indications
The combination of olodaterol and tiotropium is utilized to manage and prevent symptoms stemming from ongoing lung disease such as wheezing and shortness of breath. By controlling breathing problems, the medication enables patients to maintain their daily activities.
This inhaler comprises two drugs, which work by relaxing the muscles around the airways to facilitate breathing. Tiotropium is an anticholinergic medication, while olodaterol is a long-acting inhaled beta-agonist (LABA). Both drugs are classified as bronchodilators. It is crucial to use this medication regularly for it to be effective. It should not be used to alleviate sudden shortness of breath as it does not work immediately.
Uses and Dosage
If you are using the inhaler for the first time or have not used it for more than 21 days, make sure to prime it following the instructions provided. When priming, direct the spray towards the ground, away from your face, to avoid getting the medication in your eyes.
Inhale this medication orally, as instructed by your doctor, usually two puffs once a day, with at least one minute of interval between each inhalation. If you are taking other inhalers simultaneously, wait for a minimum of one minute between each medication.
To obtain the maximum benefits from this medication, use it regularly at the same time every day. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or frequency of use, or stop using it without consulting your doctor. Increasing the dosage or frequency will not hasten your recovery and will only increase your risk of side effects.
Learn which inhaler to use daily and which to use only when you experience sudden breathing problems. Consult with your doctor beforehand on what to do in case you develop a new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, increased sputum, or difficulty breathing at night, or if you find yourself using your quick-relief inhaler more frequently or if it doesn’t seem to be working well. Know when to treat sudden breathing issues on your own and when to seek medical attention immediately.
If you’ve been using a quick-relief inhaler, such as albuterol or salbutamol, on a daily schedule, your doctor will advise you to stop and use it only as needed for sudden shortness of breath.
If your condition does not improve or worsens, notify your doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- back pain
- bleeding gums
- bloody nose
- creamy white, curd-like patches in the mouth or throat
- difficulty having a bowel movement
- difficulty with moving
- dry skin
- heartburn
- irritation in the mouth
- mouth ulcers
- muscle pain or stiffness
- pain in the joints
- pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
- pain when eating or swallowing
- redness and swelling of the gums
- redness, swelling, or soreness of the tongue
- stuffy or runny nose
- swelling or inflammation of the mouth
- trouble sleeping
- voice changes
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- chest pain
- chills
- cough
- fever
- sneezing
- sore throat
- trouble breathing
- tightness in the chest
Caution
Before using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to tiotropium, olodaterol, ipratropium, or any inactive ingredients in this product. Inactive ingredients may cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have heart problems such as chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or previous heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type), seizures, overactive thyroid, or difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate.
Olodaterol can cause a condition called QT prolongation, which affects the heart rhythm. This condition can rarely cause serious (and occasionally fatal) symptoms such as fast/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, and fainting. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood can also increase the risk of QT prolongation. This risk may increase if you use certain medications (such as diuretics/”water pills”) or if you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Speak to your doctor about using this medication safely.
Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly QT prolongation.
This medication should only be used during pregnancy if it is clearly necessary. Discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor.
It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Do I need to rinse my mouth after using Stiolto Respimat?
Some COPD inhalers contain a steroid, which can cause mouth and throat infections if you don’t rinse your mouth afterward. Stiolto Respimat doesn’t contain a steroid and shouldn’t cause an infection.
How long does it take for Stiolto Respimat to work?
The medicine starts to work in just 5 minutes and lasts for a full 24 hours.
