Indications
Levothyroxine is utilized to manage hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by insufficient thyroid hormone production. It is also employed alongside surgery and radioactive iodine therapy in the treatment of thyroid cancer. Belonging to the hormone class of medications, levothyroxine operates by substituting thyroid hormone levels that would typically be synthesized by the body.
Uses and Dosage
Levothyroxine is available in tablet and capsule forms that are taken orally. Typically, it is taken once a day on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. Take levothyroxine exactly as directed and not exceed the prescribed dosage or frequency.
Capsules must be swallowed whole without being chewed or crushed. Avoid removing the capsule from the package until you are prepared to take it.
Tablets should be consumed with a full glass of water to avoid getting stuck in the throat, causing choking or gagging.
In cases where the tablet cannot be swallowed by an infant, child, or adult, it should be crushed and mixed in 1 to 2 teaspoons (5 to 10 mL) of water. Only mix the crushed tablets with water; avoid mixing it with food or soybean infant formula. Administer the mixture by spoon or dropper immediately, do not keep it for later use.
A low dose of levothyroxine will usually be prescribed by a physician, with the dosage gradually increased over time.
Although levothyroxine manages hypothyroidism, it does not cure it. It may take several weeks before the symptoms begin to change. Continue taking levothyroxine even if feeling well. Do not discontinue the medication without first consulting with a physician.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- weight gain or loss
- headache
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- changes in appetite
- fever
- changes in menstrual cycle
- sensitivity to heat
- hair loss
- joint pain
- leg cramps
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- shortness of breath
- wheezing
- hives
- itching
- rash
- flushing
- stomach pain
- nausea
- swelling of hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
Caution
Prior to taking levothyroxine, inform your physician or pharmacist if you have an allergy to the medication or any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before initiating the use of this medication, share your medical history, especially if you have had increased thyroid hormones (thyrotoxicosis), decreased adrenal gland function, heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
If you have diabetes, this drug may affect your blood sugar. As directed, monitor your blood sugar regularly and inform your doctor of the results. If you experience symptoms like increased thirst/urination, shakiness, unusual sweating, dizziness, or hunger, notify your doctor immediately. Your physician may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet accordingly.
Children may be more vulnerable to specific side effects of this medication, such as headaches, vision changes, and hip/leg pain. Elevated thyroid hormone levels may lead to reduced bone development/growth and decreased adult height. Ensure you attend all medical appointments so the physician can monitor your treatment progress.
Older adults may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of this drug, especially rapid/pounding/irregular heartbeat.
This medication may be used during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant as the dose may need to be adjusted.
Levothyroxine passes into breast milk but is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing infant. Consult with your doctor before breast-feeding.
