Indications
Linagliptin belongs to a class of medications known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It is used in conjunction with diet and exercise, as well as other medications, to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or is unable to use it properly, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels.
By increasing the levels of certain natural substances that lower blood sugar levels when they are too high, linagliptin can effectively manage type 2 diabetes. It is not intended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes, in which the body cannot produce insulin, or for diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition that may occur if high blood sugar is left untreated.
Uses and Dosage
As directed by your doctor, take this medication by mouth once a day, with or without food.
Your dosage is determined by your medical condition, response to treatment, and any other medications you are taking.
To gain the most benefit from this medication, take it consistently at the same time each day. Remember to follow the treatment plan prescribed by your doctor, as well as any meal and exercise recommendations.
Follow your doctor’s instructions for monitoring your blood sugar levels regularly, and keep a record of your results. If your blood sugar levels are too high or too low, inform your doctor immediately, as your dosage or treatment may need to be adjusted.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- headache
- joint pain
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- rash
- itching, flaking, or peeling of the skin
- hives
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- hoarseness
- ongoing pain that begins in the upper left or middle of the stomach but may spread to the back
- nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
Caution
Inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to linagliptin or any inactive ingredients in the product that may cause an allergic reaction or other adverse effects.
Before taking this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of pancreatitis, gallstones, or heart failure.
Low or high blood sugar may cause symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks that require clear vision or alertness until you are confident that you can do so safely.
While taking this medication, limit your alcohol consumption to decrease the risk of developing low blood sugar.
If you experience stress due to factors like fever, infection, injury, or surgery, controlling your blood sugar may become more challenging. Consult your doctor, as stress may require changes to your treatment plan, medication, or blood sugar testing.
During pregnancy, use this medication only when necessary. Pregnancy can cause or worsen diabetes. Work with your doctor to develop a plan for managing your blood sugar while pregnant, as your diabetes treatment may need to be modified. Discuss the benefits and risks of various treatments, such as diet, exercise, and medication.
It is uncertain if this medication passes into breast milk. Speak to your doctor before breastfeeding.
