Description

Indications

Vortioxetine is indicated for the treatment of depression. Its mechanism of action involves facilitating the restoration of a specific naturally occurring neurotransmitter (serotonin) balance in the brain.

Vortioxetine functions as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and a serotonin receptor modulator. This medication has the potential to enhance mood, sleep, appetite, and energy levels, and may aid in the rekindling of interest in daily activities.

Uses and Dosage

Vortioxetine is administered orally in tablet form and is typically taken once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Follow the instructions on the prescription label precisely, and to seek clarification from your physician or pharmacist on any unclear aspects.

Vortioxetine should be taken exactly as prescribed and the dose should not be increased or decreased, nor the frequency of administration altered, without consulting your physician.

The dose of vortioxetine may be adjusted by your doctor depending on your response to treatment and any associated side effects.

The full benefits of vortioxetine may take up to 2-4 weeks or longer to manifest. Continue taking vortioxetine even if you feel better, and to not discontinue its use without first consulting with your doctor.

Your doctor will typically reduce your dose gradually to minimize the risk of withdrawal symptoms, which may include headache, mood changes, irritability, agitation, nausea, dizziness, burning, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet, anxiety, confusion, sweating, shaking, frenzied or abnormally excited mood, ringing in the ears, tiredness, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, and seizures. Any such symptoms experienced while reducing your dose of vortioxetine or shortly after discontinuation should be reported to your doctor.

Caution

Prior to initiating treatment with vortioxetine, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any known allergies to the medication or other substances. The product may contain inactive ingredients that have the potential to cause an allergic reaction or other adverse effects.

Disclose your medical history, particularly if you have a personal or family history of bipolar/manic-depressive disorder, suicide attempts, seizures, low blood sodium levels, intestinal ulcers/bleeding, bleeding disorders, or glaucoma of the angle-closure type, to your healthcare provider or pharmacist before commencing this medication.

This drug may cause dizziness, which can be exacerbated by the use of alcohol or marijuana. To avoid any potential danger, do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in activities requiring mental alertness until it is safe to do so.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly bleeding, and may be more likely to develop hyponatremia, a type of salt imbalance, particularly if they are taking diuretics (water pills) alongside this medication.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when necessary, as it may harm an unborn baby. Infants born to mothers who have used this medication in the last three months of pregnancy may experience withdrawal symptoms such as feeding or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness, or persistent crying. If you observe any of these symptoms in your newborn, inform your doctor immediately.

As untreated mental/mood conditions such as depression can have severe consequences, it is crucial not to stop taking this medication unless directed by your healthcare provider. If you are contemplating pregnancy, currently pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, it is advisable to discuss the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy with your doctor.
