Indications
Cefpodoxime belongs to a class of medications known as cephalosporin antibiotics, which are utilized to treat various bacterial infections, including bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections of the skin, ear, sinuses, throat, tonsils, and urinary tract. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
Uses and Dosage
Cefpodoxime can be taken orally as a tablet or suspension. The recommended dosage frequency is every 12 hours for a duration of 5 to 14 days, depending on the type of infection being treated. For gonorrhea, a single dose is usually sufficient. When taking the tablet, consume it with food, while the suspension can be taken with or without food.
Take cefpodoxime at the same time each day and adhere to the prescription label instructions carefully. Do not alter the dosage, increase or decrease it, or take it more often than instructed by your doctor.
Before use, shake the suspension well to ensure the medication is evenly distributed. Improvement in symptoms should be noticeable within the first few days of cefpodoxime treatment. Contact your doctor if your condition fails to improve or worsens.
Even if you start feeling better, continue to take cefpodoxime until you have finished the full course of medication prescribed by your doctor. If you discontinue the medication too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely eradicated, and bacteria may develop resistance to antibiotics.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- stomach pain
- swelling, redness, irritation, burning, or itching of the vagina
- white vaginal discharge
- headache
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- watery or bloody stools, stomach cramps, or fever during treatment or for up to two or more months after stopping treatment
- rash
- itching
- hives
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- wheezing
- a return of fever, sore throat, chills, or other signs of infection
Caution
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to cefpodoxime proxetil, penicillins, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or have any other allergies before using this medication. The product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly kidney disease, or stomach/intestinal disease (such as colitis), before taking this medication.
The use of this medication can decrease the efficacy of live bacterial vaccines, such as the typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking this medication before receiving any immunizations/vaccinations.
As kidney function typically decreases with age, and this medication is removed by the kidneys, elderly individuals may be at a greater risk of experiencing side effects when using this drug.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
This medication passes into breast milk and could have adverse effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Is Vantin well tolerated?
Vantin is generally well tolerated, with mild to moderate gastrointestinal disturbances occurring in 4 to 15% of patients.
Can I eat yogurt while taking Vantin?
