Indications
Safinamide is prescribed in conjunction with a combination of levodopa and carbidopa to manage “off” episodes. These episodes are characterized by difficulties in movement, walking, and speech, which can occur as a result of the wearing off of medication or unpredictably. This treatment is intended for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurological disorder that leads to challenges with motor skills, muscle coordination, and balance. Safinamide belongs to a category of drugs known as monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors. Its mechanism of action involves boosting the levels of dopamine, a natural substance crucial for regulating movement, in the brain.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally, with or without food, following your doctor’s instructions, typically once a day.
The prescribed dosage depends on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment. Do not increase the dose or take it more frequently than directed. Doing so will not expedite your recovery and may heighten the risk of side effects.
To ensure maximum benefits, adhere to a regular medication schedule, taking it at the same time each day.
Do not discontinue this medication without consulting your doctor, as abrupt cessation may exacerbate certain conditions. Your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction of the dose.
In rare cases, consuming a substantial amount of tyramine while taking safinamide and for two weeks after discontinuation may result in a severe spike in blood pressure. If you experience discomfort after consuming specific foods or beverages while on this medication, seek medical attention.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- worsening or more frequent body movements that you can not control
- vision changes
- hallucinations
- delusional beliefs
- agitation
- fever
- confusion
- fast heartbeat
- shivering
- severe muscle stiffness or twitching
- loss of coordination
Caution
Before starting safinamide, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any allergies, including allergies to this medication or any inactive ingredients it may contain.
Prior to using this medicine, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of liver disease, high blood pressure, mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression, eye problems like macular degeneration or uveitis, or sleep disorders.
This drug may induce drowsiness or dizziness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from operating vehicles or machinery or engaging in activities requiring vigilance until you can do so safely.
During pregnancy, only use this medication when it is clearly essential. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Seek advice from your doctor before breastfeeding.
