Description

Indications

Azithromycin is prescribed for the treatment of specific bacterial infections, including bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and various infections affecting the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, and throat. It is also utilized to manage or prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections, a lung infection commonly found in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Azithromycin falls into the category of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics, which function by halting the proliferation of bacteria.

Uses and Dosage

Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication by mouth, usually once daily, either with or without food, as directed. If you experience stomach upset, you can take it with food. The dosage will be determined based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment.

For the best results, ensure you take this antibiotic at regular intervals throughout the day. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) every day.

Continue taking this medication until you have completed the full prescribed course, even if your symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping the medication prematurely may allow bacteria to persist and potentially lead to a recurrence of the infection.

If you’re using antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium, be aware that they can interfere with the absorption of azithromycin when taken concurrently. To avoid this interaction, make sure to wait at least 2 hours before or after taking azithromycin if you’ve used an antacid containing aluminum or magnesium.

Caution

Before using azithromycin, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, particularly if you are allergic to azithromycin itself or other antibiotics like erythromycin, clarithromycin, or telithromycin. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, or a specific muscle disorder known as myasthenia gravis.

Azithromycin has the potential to cause a heart rhythm condition called QT prolongation, which, although rare, can result in serious issues like a fast or irregular heartbeat, and may necessitate immediate medical attention. Your risk of experiencing QT prolongation may increase if you have low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood, use certain medications (such as diuretics or “water pills”), or have conditions that cause excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. It’s essential to discuss the safe use of azithromycin with your doctor.

Azithromycin might reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines, like the typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare provider about your azithromycin usage before undergoing any immunizations or vaccinations.

Older adults could be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly QT prolongation.

Azithromycin should be used during pregnancy only when it’s clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using azithromycin.
