Description

Indications

The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is a pharmaceutical treatment utilized for addressing specific bacterial infections, including ear infections, lung infections, sinusitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.

Amoxicillin belongs to a class of antibiotics known as penicillin-like antibiotics, which function by halting the proliferation of bacteria. Clavulanic acid, on the other hand, is a medication belonging to the beta-lactamase inhibitor class, which acts by protecting amoxicillin from degradation by bacteria.

Note that antibiotics are not effective in treating viral infections such as colds and flu. Overuse of antibiotics can increase the likelihood of developing future infections that are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Uses and Dosage

Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is available in various forms including tablets, chewable tablets, extended-release tablets, and a liquid suspension. Take the medication at the start of a meal, either every 8 hours for three times a day or every 12 hours for twice a day. Maintain a consistent schedule for taking the medication to ensure its efficacy.

Follow the instructions specified on the prescription label and to not alter the dose without consulting a healthcare professional. The extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole, while the liquid suspension should be shaken well prior to each use. The chewable tablets should be thoroughly chewed before swallowing, and the other tablets should be taken with a full glass of water.

Complete the entire prescribed amount of the medication, even if the symptoms improve, to ensure that the infection is completely treated and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
