Description

Indications

Rosuvastatin is a medication that, in combination with diet and exercise, is used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and to lower the likelihood of requiring heart surgery in individuals who have or are at risk of developing heart disease. It is also used to decrease the levels of “bad” cholesterol, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides in the blood while increasing the levels of “good” cholesterol, such as high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

Rosuvastatin belongs to a class of medications known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. It works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the body, which lowers the amount of cholesterol that can accumulate on the walls of the arteries and obstruct blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.

Uses and Dosage

Your doctor will instruct you on how to take this medication, typically orally administered once a day, with or without food.

If you are taking the capsule form of this medication, swallow it whole and do not crush or chew the capsules. You may open the capsule carefully and sprinkle the contents on a soft food, such as applesauce, chocolate- or vanilla-flavored pudding. Consume the entire mixture without chewing it and use it within 60 minutes. Do not prepare the mixture in advance.

The appropriate dosage of the medication will depend on your medical condition, age, race, and other medications you may be taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you are using, including prescription and nonprescription drugs, as well as herbal products. Your doctor may advise you to start with a lower dose if you are of Asian descent as you may be more sensitive to the effects of the medication.

Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium may reduce the absorption of the drug. If you are taking this type of antacid, take it at least 2 hours after taking this medication.

To benefit the most from this medication, take it regularly at the same time every day. Even if you start to feel better, continue to take the medication. People with high cholesterol or triglycerides often do not experience any symptoms.

Continue following your doctor’s advice on diet and exercise. It may take up to 4 weeks before you experience the full benefits of this medication.
