Indications
Gliclazide is primarily prescribed for individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to manage their blood glucose levels.
This medication is used when dietary modifications, physical activity, and weight reduction alone have proven insufficient in achieving adequate blood glucose control. Gliclazide is classified as an oral hypoglycemic medication. It functions by augmenting pancreatic insulin secretion and enhancing the body’s utilization of insulin, thereby promoting improved glycemic regulation.
Uses and Dosage
Gliclazide is available in tablet and extended-release (long-acting) tablet forms for oral administration. The regular tablet is typically taken one or more times a day, 30 minutes before breakfast or meals. On the other hand, the extended-release tablet is usually taken once a day with breakfast. To ensure consistency, take gliclazide around the same time(s) every day.
Follow the instructions on your prescription label meticulously, and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist on any elements you find unclear. Take gliclazide precisely as directed—do not exceed or decrease the dosage or take it more frequently than prescribed by your doctor.
Your doctor may initiate your gliclazide treatment with a low dose, gradually adjusting it if necessary. Over time, gliclazide may not regulate your blood sugar as effectively as at the beginning of your treatment. Your doctor may make dose adjustments to optimize the medication’s efficacy. Inform your doctor about your well-being and any instances of higher or lower blood sugar test results during your treatment.
When taking extended-release tablets, swallow them whole without chewing, dividing, or crushing.
While gliclazide helps control blood sugar, it does not cure diabetes. Continue taking glipizide even if you feel well. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- diarrhea
- gas
- feeling jittery
- dizziness
- uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
- red or itchy skin
- rash
- hives
- blisters
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- light-colored stools
- dark urine
- pain in the upper right part of the stomach
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- fever
- sore throat
Caution
- Prior to initiating gliclazide treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, including allergies to glyburide or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, specific hormonal conditions, electrolyte imbalances, or a particular nervous system disorder (autonomic neuropathy).
- Extreme low or high blood sugar levels can result in symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness or clear vision until you are certain that you can perform them safely.
- While taking this medication, limit alcohol consumption as it may heighten the risk of developing low blood sugar. In rare cases, alcohol can interact with glyburide and cause a serious reaction known as disulfiram-like reaction, characterized by symptoms such as facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or stomach pain.
- When your body is subjected to stress due to factors such as fever, infection, injury, or surgery, it may become more challenging to regulate your blood sugar levels. Consult your doctor in such situations, as adjustments to your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar testing may be necessary.
- This medication may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Minimize sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn or develop skin blisters or redness.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly low blood sugar.
- During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if absolutely necessary. Pregnancy can contribute to the development or exacerbation of diabetes. Discuss a comprehensive plan with your doctor for managing your blood sugar levels while pregnant. In certain cases, your doctor may substitute insulin for gliclazide during pregnancy. If gliclazide is used, it may be switched to insulin at least two weeks before the anticipated delivery date due to the risk of low blood sugar in newborns. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Similar drugs are known to pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQ
What is the difference between metformin and Diamicron?
Metformin reduces the amount of glucose produced in the liver, and also makes muscle tissue absorb more glucose. Diamicron increases the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas.
Why does Diamicron cause weight gain?
Diamicron can make you hungrier, so it can be quite challenging to avoid putting on weight while you’re taking it.
