Description

Indications

The combination of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide is prescribed for the management of high blood pressure. By reducing elevated blood pressure, this treatment aids in the prevention of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney issues.

Valsartan belongs to the class of medications known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), which work by promoting the relaxation of blood vessels, facilitating improved blood flow. Hydrochlorothiazide, on the other hand, is a diuretic or “water pill” that enhances urine production, assisting the body in eliminating excess salt and water.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally, with or without food, typically once daily. If this medication increases your frequency of urination, take it at least 4 hours before going to bed to minimize the need to wake up for urination.

If you are also taking certain cholesterol-lowering medications (such as cholestyramine or colestipol, which are bile acid-binding resins), ensure a minimum interval of 4 hours before or after taking those medications when taking this product.

The dosage of this medication is determined based on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment.

Maintain a regular schedule of taking this medication to derive the maximum benefit. To assist with remembering, take it at the same time each day.

Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as most individuals with high blood pressure do not experience noticeable symptoms.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase.

Caution

Prior to initiating this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to valsartan or hydrochlorothiazide, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially cause allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of gout, kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, dehydration, high potassium levels in the blood, or skin cancer.

This drug may cause dizziness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can further intensify dizziness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can safely do so.

Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can increase the risk of lightheadedness or dehydration. Report prolonged episodes of diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor. To prevent dehydration, ensure an adequate intake of fluids unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

If you have diabetes, this medication may affect your blood sugar levels. Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels as directed and share the results with your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet accordingly.

This medication may increase your sensitivity to sunlight and raise your risk of developing skin cancer, especially with prolonged use. Limit your sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, apply sunscreen, and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn, skin blisters or redness, or notice any new or changed moles or skin lesions.

This product may affect your potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness and changes in urine output (indicative of kidney problems).

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Avoid pregnancy while using valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide, as valsartan may harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, promptly consult your doctor regarding the risks and benefits of this medication.

It is unclear whether valsartan passes into breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide does pass into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
