Description

Indications

Transdermal selegiline is utilized for the treatment of depression. Selegiline belongs to a pharmacological class known as monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing the levels of specific naturally occurring compounds essential for the maintenance of mental equilibrium.

Uses and Dosage

Transdermal selegiline is administered in the form of a skin patch. It is typically applied once daily and left in place for a duration of 24 hours. Remove the previous selegiline patch and apply a new one at approximately the same time each day. Use transdermal selegiline strictly as directed, refraining from applying additional patches or exceeding the prescribed frequency as determined by your doctor.

Initiating treatment with transdermal selegiline usually involves commencing with a low dosage, which may be gradually increased, but no more frequently than once every two weeks.

While transdermal selegiline effectively manages depression, it does not serve as a cure. Improvement in your condition may become noticeable after utilizing transdermal selegiline for at least one week or longer. Nonetheless, continue using transdermal selegiline even if you feel better. Ceasing the use of transdermal selegiline should only be done after consulting with your doctor.

When applying selegiline patches, ensure that the skin is dry and smooth. Suitable areas for patch placement include the upper chest, the back, the upper thigh, or the outer surface of the upper arm. Select a location where the patch will not experience friction from tight clothing. Avoid applying selegiline patches to areas of the skin that are hairy, oily, irritated, broken, scarred, or calloused.

Once a selegiline patch is applied, it should remain on the skin continuously until it is time to replace it with a fresh patch. If the patch becomes loose or falls off prematurely, attempt to reattach it by gently pressing it back in place with your fingers. If reattachment is not possible, discard the patch and apply a new one to a different area. The replacement patch should be applied at the regularly scheduled time for patch changes.

Under no circumstances should selegiline patches be cut.

While wearing a selegiline patch, shield it from direct sources of heat such as heating pads, electric blankets, heat lamps, saunas, hot tubs, and heated water beds. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight should also be avoided.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • redness of the area where you applied the patch
  • diarrhea
  • heartburn
  • dry mouth
  • weight loss
  • rash

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • severe headache
  • fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat
  • chest pain
  • stiff or sore neck
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • sweating
  • confusion
  • widened pupils (black circles in the middle of the eyes)
  • sensitivity of the eyes to light

Caution

Prior to initiating selegiline treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to selegiline or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a certain type of adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), cerebrovascular disease, heart conditions, personal or family history of high blood pressure, a history of severe or frequent headaches, personal or family history of mental or mood disorders, liver problems, certain nervous system disorders (Parkinson’s syndrome, seizures), an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or personal or family history of glaucoma (specifically angle-closure type).

This medication may induce dizziness or drowsiness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can safely do so.

Avoid exposing the area of your skin where the selegiline patch is applied to direct sources of heat, such as heating pads, electric blankets, heat lamps, saunas, hot tubs, heated water beds, or prolonged direct sunlight. Heat sources may result in increased drug absorption, heightening the likelihood of experiencing side effects.

If you are scheduled for an MRI test, inform the testing personnel that you are utilizing the selegiline patch. Some patches may contain metals that can cause severe burns during an MRI. Consult your doctor to determine whether you need to remove the patch prior to the test, apply a new patch afterward, and learn the proper procedure to follow.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly its impact on blood pressure.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

Since untreated mental or mood disorders (such as depression) can be serious conditions, do not discontinue this medication unless specifically instructed by your doctor. If you are planning a pregnancy, become pregnant, or suspect you may be pregnant, promptly consult your doctor to evaluate the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy.

It is uncertain whether this drug passes into breast milk. Due to the potential risk to the infant, it is not recommended to breastfeed while using this medication and for a period of five days after the last dose.
