Indications
Pericyazine is combined with other medications to address specific mental/mood disorders, such as schizophrenia. Its therapeutic effects include diminishing aggressive or angry behavior and reducing the inclination to harm oneself or others. Classified as a phenothiazine within the realm of psychiatric drugs, pericyazine operates by restoring the equilibrium of certain natural substances in the brain.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication orally, typically twice daily in the morning and evening, or as per your doctor’s instructions.
If using the liquid drops, utilize the provided dropper to accurately measure each dose; avoid using a household spoon as it may lead to an incorrect dosage.
The prescribed amount is contingent on your medical condition, age, and response to the treatment. Your doctor might initiate the treatment with a low dose, adjusting it gradually based on your individual response. It could take several weeks before the complete therapeutic effects of this medication manifest.
Consistently take the medication to derive optimal benefits. Establish a routine by taking it at the same times each day to aid in remembering. Refrain from increasing the dose, altering the frequency, or extending the duration beyond the prescribed period, as doing so may elevate the risk of serious side effects.
Consult your doctor before discontinuing the medication, as abruptly stopping it may worsen certain conditions. If cessation is deemed necessary, your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction of the dosage.
Inform your doctor if your condition persists or deteriorates over time.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- abnormal movements
- changes in monthly menstrual cycle
- decreased sexual interest and/or function
- swelling of breasts and milk production in males and females
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- dry mouth
- nausea
- headache
- weight changes
- blurred vision
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- decrease in white blood cell count
- difficulty urinating
- dark discoloration of the skin/eyes
- easy bleeding/bruising
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- heart attack
- serious heart arrhythmia
- seizures
Caution
- Before commencing pericyazine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, particularly if you are allergic to pericyazine itself, other phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine, thioridazine), or any other substances present in the medication. Inactive ingredients can also provoke allergic reactions or other complications.
- Disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have blood disorders, decreased bone marrow function, liver disease, a history of intoxication with CNS/respiratory depressants, heart issues, low blood pressure, seizures, difficulties urinating, eye problems, stomach/intestinal blockage problems, a specific type of tumor (pheochromocytoma), severe breathing problems, or kidney disease.
- Pericyazine may lead to a condition affecting heart rhythm (QT prolongation), which can rarely cause serious fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms requiring immediate medical attention. The risk of QT prolongation may be higher with certain medical conditions or if taking drugs that also cause QT prolongation. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may further elevate this risk. Discuss the safe use of pericyazine with your doctor, especially if you are taking certain drugs (e.g., diuretics/”water pills”) or experiencing conditions like severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
- This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects. Refrain from activities requiring alertness or clear vision, such as driving or using machinery, until you can do so safely.
- Increased sensitivity to the sun may occur with this medication. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing outdoors. Report any sunburn or skin abnormalities to your doctor promptly.
- Pericyazine may reduce sweating, increasing the risk of heat stroke. Avoid overheating by refraining from strenuous activities or exercise in hot weather, or using hot tubs. Stay hydrated and dress lightly in hot weather. Seek medical help if you experience persistent fever, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects, particularly drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and QT prolongation, increasing the risk of falls.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Babies born to mothers who used pericyazine in the last 3 months of pregnancy may rarely exhibit symptoms like muscle stiffness or shakiness, drowsiness, feeding/breathing difficulties, or constant crying. Promptly notify the doctor if you observe such symptoms in your newborn, especially during their first month.
- Since untreated mental/mood problems (e.g., schizophrenia) can be serious, do not discontinue this medication without your doctor’s guidance. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or suspect pregnancy, discuss the benefits and risks of using pericyazine during pregnancy with your doctor.
- The passage of this drug into breast milk is uncertain. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
