Description

Indications

Labetalol is employed, either independently or in conjunction with other medications, to manage high blood pressure. Reducing elevated blood pressure levels is instrumental in averting the occurrence of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney complications. This medication exhibits dual properties as both an alpha blocker and beta blocker. It operates by obstructing the influence of specific naturally occurring chemicals in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This action leads to a reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, and the burden on the heart.

Uses and Dosage

Labetalol is available in tablet form for oral administration. Typically, it is taken two or three times a day. To ensure consistent adherence, aim to take labetalol at roughly the same times each day.

Take labetalol precisely as prescribed, avoiding both overconsumption and underconsumption, as well as any deviations from the prescribed frequency.

Your doctor may commence your treatment with a low dose of labetalol and gradually raise it to allow your body to adapt to the medication. During this period, maintain open communication with your doctor, discussing your overall well-being and any symptoms you may encounter.

Labetalol effectively manages high blood pressure but does not offer a cure. Continue taking labetalol even if you feel well. Do not discontinue its use without consulting your doctor. Suddenly halting labetalol intake could lead to severe heart issues such as angina (chest pain) or a heart attack. Your doctor will likely recommend a gradual dose reduction. During this phase, your doctor will closely monitor your progress and may advise you to refrain from strenuous physical activity.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • stuffy nose

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • chest pain
  • rapid, pounding, or irregular heartbeat

Caution

Before initiating labetalol treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you may have, including allergies to labetalol or other substances. This product could contain inactive ingredients that might trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Share your medical history, especially if you have a history of heart problems like heart failure, slow heartbeat, or second- or third-degree atrioventricular block, as well as breathing issues like asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. Inform your healthcare provider if you have kidney or liver disease, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), a history of severe allergic reactions necessitating treatment with epinephrine, blood circulation problems such as Raynaud’s disease or peripheral vascular disease, mental/mood disorders like depression, a specific muscle disorder known as myasthenia gravis, or certain eye problems like cataracts or glaucoma.

This medication may cause dizziness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify dizziness. Avoid activities that require alertness until you can do them safely.

Labetalol may prevent the rapid or pounding heartbeat typically experienced when blood sugar levels drop too low (hypoglycemia). The risk is higher if you have diabetes, are vomiting, fasting, or not eating regularly. Other hypoglycemia symptoms such as dizziness and sweating are not affected by this drug.

If you have diabetes, labetalol may make it more challenging to manage your blood sugar levels. Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels as instructed by your doctor. Notify your doctor promptly if you exhibit symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst and urination. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes treatment, exercise regimen, or diet.

Children may be at an increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) while using this drug, especially if they are vomiting or not eating regularly. To help prevent low blood sugar, ensure that children eat regularly. If your child is unable to eat regularly, experiences vomiting, or displays symptoms of low blood sugar (like sweating or shaking), promptly inform the doctor.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, including dizziness and lightheadedness, which can heighten the risk of falling.

Labetalol has been employed to manage high blood pressure in pregnant women, as controlling high blood pressure is crucial for the health of both the mother and unborn baby. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or suspect you may be pregnant, consult your doctor regarding the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy.

On rare occasions, newborns born to mothers who took labetalol during pregnancy may exhibit symptoms such as low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, slow breathing, and low blood sugar (including shaking or unusual sweating) for several days after birth. Notify the doctor immediately if you observe any of these symptoms in your newborn.

This medication passes into breast milk, and its impact on a nursing infant is uncertain. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
