Indications
Tamsulosin is a medication used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. As men age, the prostate gland can enlarge and cause muscular tension, obstructing the tube responsible for draining urine from the bladder, leading to symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty completely emptying the bladder.
Tamsulosin works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and opening of the bladder, improving urinary flow and alleviating symptoms, though it does not shrink the prostate. Note that the prostate may continue to enlarge, potentially worsening symptoms, and surgery may eventually be required.
Uses and Dosage
Tamsulosin is administered in the form of a capsule and is intended for oral consumption. Take it once a day, 30 minutes after a meal that is taken at the same time each day. It is imperative to follow the instructions as stated on the prescription label, and if there is any uncertainty, one should seek clarification from their doctor or pharmacist.
The capsule should be ingested whole, without splitting, chewing, crushing, or opening. The physician may begin the treatment with a low dose of tamsulosin and gradually increase it over a period of 2 to 4 weeks.
Tamsulosin may result in a rapid decrease in blood pressure, potentially leading to dizziness or fainting. The likelihood of this occurrence is heightened when starting treatment, after a dose increase, or upon resuming therapy after a break. To reduce the risk of injury, avoid activities that may be hazardous in the event of fainting during these instances.
Tamsulosin is only effective in controlling the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, but it cannot cure the condition. The patient must continue to take tamsulosin even if they feel well, and should not stop taking it without first consulting with their physician.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- abnormal ejaculation
- back pain
- body aches or pain
- congestion
- headache
- lack or loss of strength
- sneezing
- stuffy or runny nose
- tender, swollen glands in the neck
- trouble swallowing
- voice changes
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:
- cough or hoarseness
- fever or chills
- lower back or side pain
- painful or difficult urination
- chest pain
Caution
Before administering tamsulosin, inform your physician or pharmacist if you have any allergies, including to the medication itself.
When using tamsulosin, provide your physician or pharmacist with a complete medical history, particularly if you have a history of low blood pressure or ocular problems such as cataracts or glaucoma.
Tamsulosin may cause drowsiness or dizziness, which can be amplified when combined with alcohol or marijuana. Exercise caution when engaging in activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of tamsulosin, particularly dizziness and low blood pressure when changing positions from sitting to standing or vice versa. These side effects can increase the risk of falls, and caution is advised.
