Indications
Cefprozil is employed in the treatment of specific bacterial infections, including bronchitis and infections affecting the skin, ears, sinuses, throat, and tonsils. It belongs to the class of medications known as cephalosporin antibiotics, acting by inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally as instructed by your doctor, typically once or twice daily. If stomach upset occurs, you may take it with food.
Before each dose, ensure to shake the bottle well. Measure the dose accurately using a special measuring device or spoon; refrain from using a household spoon as it may lead to an incorrect dose.
The dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also adjusted according to their weight.
For optimal effectiveness, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced intervals. To aid in remembering, take the medication at the same time(s) daily.
Continue taking this medication until you’ve completed the full prescribed amount, even if symptoms improve within a few days. Ceasing the medication prematurely may result in the infection recurring.
Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- genital itching
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- rash
- itching
- hives
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- wheezing
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or eyes
- watery or bloody stools, stomach cramps, or fever during treatment or for up to two or more months after stopping treatment
- a return of fever, sore throat, chills, or other signs of infection
Caution
- Before taking cefprozil, communicate with your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, including allergies to cefprozil, penicillins, or other cephalosporin antibiotics like cephalexin. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could lead to allergic reactions or other issues.
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have kidney disease or intestinal disease (colitis).
- This medicine may contain aspartame. If you have phenylketonuria (PKU) or any other condition requiring a restriction of aspartame (or phenylalanine) intake, consult your doctor or pharmacist to ensure the safe use of this medicine.
- Be cautious, as this drug may cause dizziness. The use of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can do so safely.
- Cefprozil may impact the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines, such as the typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare professional about your use of cefprozil before undergoing any immunizations or vaccinations.
- Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, and children, especially regarding rash, may also be more sensitive.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to make an informed decision about its use.
