Description

Indications

Ramipril is employed for the management of hypertension, with the aim of reducing the risk of complications such as strokes, heart attacks, and renal dysfunction. Ramipril has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing the survival rates of patients post myocardial infarction, and in reducing the likelihood of cardiovascular events in high-risk patients. This medication may also be prescribed for patients with heart failure in the aftermath of a recent cardiac event.

Ramipril functions as an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, exerting its therapeutic effect by inducing relaxation of blood vessels, thus promoting improved blood circulation.

Uses and Dosage

Ramipril is administered orally in capsule form, and it is generally recommended to be taken once or twice a day, with or without food. Take ramipril around the same time(s) every day. Take ramipril precisely as prescribed, neither in greater nor lesser amounts than instructed by your doctor or with a higher frequency.

The capsule should be swallowed whole, or alternatively, the contents can be sprinkled onto a small quantity of applesauce (approximately 4 oz.) or mixed with 4 oz. (about 120 mL) of water or apple juice. The mixture should be completely consumed. It is permissible to prepare this mixture beforehand and store it for up to 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours in the refrigerator.

Typically, the doctor will initiate treatment with a low dose of ramipril, which will be incrementally increased over time.

Ramipril effectively manages hypertension and heart failure, but it is not a curative medication. Continue taking ramipril even if one feels well. Abrupt discontinuation without medical consultation should be avoided.

Caution

Prior to initiating treatment with ramipril, disclose any allergy to it or to other ACE inhibitors, such as benazepril, or any other known allergies to your healthcare provider or pharmacist. The inactive ingredients present in the medication may trigger an allergic reaction or other adverse effects.

Before taking this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have experienced angioedema (swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat), undergone blood filtering procedures such as LDL apheresis or dialysis, or have high levels of potassium in your blood.

This medication may cause dizziness, and consuming alcohol or marijuana may intensify this effect. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in any activity that requires alertness until you can perform these tasks safely.

To minimize the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness, stand up gradually from a sitting or lying position.

Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may lead to dehydration, thereby increasing the risk of lightheadedness. Prolonged diarrhea or vomiting should be reported to your doctor, and adequate fluid intake is essential unless advised otherwise.

This medication has the potential to raise potassium levels. Prior to using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Older adults may be more susceptible to experiencing side effects such as dizziness or elevated potassium levels when using this medication.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you should not use ramipril, and your doctor should be informed immediately. Ramipril may harm a developing fetus, and discussing the benefits and risks of this medication with your doctor is crucial.

It is unclear if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
