Description

Indications

This medication is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, aiming to reduce elevated blood pressure levels and mitigate the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and renal complications. The formulation consists of two active ingredients: irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Irbesartan functions as an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), effectively promoting vasodilation and facilitating improved blood flow. Hydrochlorothiazide acts as a diuretic, commonly referred to as a “water pill,” by enhancing urine production, thereby aiding the elimination of excess salt and water from the body.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally as instructed by your healthcare provider, typically once daily, with or without food. In the event that this medication leads to increased frequency of urination, take it at least four hours prior to your bedtime to minimize the need to urinate during the night.

If you are also prescribed certain cholesterol-lowering medications (such as cholestyramine or colestipol, classified as bile acid-binding resins), ensure a time interval of at least four hours before or four to six hours after taking irbesartan/hydrochlorothiazide.

The dosage of this medication is determined based on your medical condition and response to the treatment.

To derive maximum benefit from this medication, adhere to a regular dosing schedule, taking it at the same time each day.

Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as individuals with hypertension often do not experience noticeable symptoms.

Inform your healthcare provider if there is no improvement in your condition or if it worsens.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • diarrhea
  • heartburn
  • excessive tiredness

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

Caution

Prior to initiating this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies to irbesartan or hydrochlorothiazide, as well as any other allergies you may have. This product may contain inactive components that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of gout, kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, dehydration, elevated levels of potassium in the blood, or skin cancer.

This drug has the potential to cause dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana may intensify this dizziness. Refrain from operating vehicles, machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you are confident in your ability to do so safely.

Excessive perspiration, diarrhea, or vomiting can increase the risk of dizziness or dehydration. Inform your doctor if you experience prolonged episodes of diarrhea or vomiting. To prevent dehydration, ensure an adequate intake of fluids unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

If you have diabetes, this product may affect your blood sugar levels. Regularly monitor your blood sugar as directed and share the results with your doctor. Adjustments to your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet may be necessary.

This medication may heighten your sensitivity to sunlight and increase the risk of skin cancer, particularly with prolonged use. Limit your sun exposure, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps, and employ the use of sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Promptly notify your doctor if you experience sunburn, skin blisters/redness, or observe new or changed moles/skin lesions.

This product can impact your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness and changes in urine volume (indicative of kidney issues).

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor promptly. Avoid pregnancy while using irbesartan/hydrochlorothiazide, as this medication may harm an unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor if you become pregnant.

The passage of irbesartan into breast milk is unknown. Hydrochlorothiazide does pass into breast milk, although it is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
