Description

Indications

Tolterodine is indicated for the management of overactive bladder, a medical condition characterized by involuntary contractions of the bladder muscles that result in urinary urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence. This medication belongs to the antimuscarinic class of drugs and exerts its therapeutic effect by creating a relaxant effect on the bladder smooth muscle, thereby inhibiting bladder contraction.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, as instructed by your physician, typically two times a day.

For optimal efficacy, use this medication on a regular basis. To facilitate adherence, administer it at the same time(s) each day. The dosage is individualized based on your medical history, particularly any kidney or liver dysfunction, response to therapy, and concomitant medications.

Avoid increasing your dosage or taking this medication more frequently than prescribed. Doing so will not accelerate your recovery but may elevate the risk of severe side effects.

Notify your physician if your symptoms persist or worsen.

Caution

Prior to taking tolterodine, inform your pharmacist or doctor of any allergies you may have, including an allergy to fesoterodine, or any other allergies. This product may contain inactive components that can lead to allergic reactions or other issues.

Before using this medication, make sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist of your medical history, especially if you have any difficulties emptying your bladder, a severe blockage of the stomach or intestines (known as gastric retention), glaucoma, a stomach or intestinal ailment, severe constipation, kidney disease, liver disease, or a particular muscle ailment known as myasthenia gravis.

Tolterodine may cause a heart rhythm disorder known as QT prolongation. QT prolongation can rarely result in serious, occasionally fatal, rapid or irregular heartbeat and other symptoms such as severe dizziness or fainting that require prompt medical attention.

Older adults may be more vulnerable to the side effects of this medication, especially QT prolongation, drowsiness, confusion, constipation, or difficulty urinating. Drowsiness and confusion can heighten the risk of falling.

This medication may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. The use of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Do not operate machinery, drive, or perform any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are confident in your ability to do so safely.

This medication may reduce sweating, increasing the likelihood of heat stroke. Avoid activities that could cause overheating, such as strenuous labor or exercise in hot weather, or the use of hot tubs. Drink plenty of fluids and dress appropriately when the weather is warm. If you feel overheated, look for a cool place to rest and seek medical attention immediately if you experience a persistent fever, changes in mood or mental state, headache, or dizziness.
