Description

Drug Description:

This medicine is used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to prevent asthma in children 12 months to 8 years of age. It should not be used to treat an acute asthma attack.Store upright between 68 to 77 degrees F. Protect from light. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once the aluminum foil envelope has been opened, the medicine may be used for 2 weeks if protected from light. Write the date the medicine was open on the back oHow much medicine your child takes and how often he or she takes it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine your child is taking, talk with your health care provider. Gently shake in a circular motion before using this medicine. If a serious tightness in the lungs or increased wheezing or coughing occurs after taking this medicine, it should be treated at once with a fast-acting inhaled bronchodilator. Stop using this medicine and start using the bronchodilator. Talk with your health care provider at once when episodes of asthma do not respond to your child’s usual dose of medicine. Patients should take this medicine as directed since its effectiveness depends on regular use. Do not change your child’s medication schedule without talking to your child’s doctor. Do not mix this medicine with other medications in the nebulizer. This medicine should be given with a jet nebulizer connected to a compressor with an adequate air flow equipped with a mouthpiece or suitable facemask. Make sure the facemask is properly adjusted. Do not use ultrasonic nebulizers to give this medicine. Rinse the mouth with water after each treatment to avoid mouth infections. Make sure to wash the face after using a facemask. Improvement may be seen within 2 to 8 days after beginning treatment although the full benefit may not been seen for 4 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the asthma symptoms do not improve in 4 to 6 weeks, contact your child’s health care provider. If symptoms of withdrawal occur when switching from an oral medicine to an inhaled one (muscle and joint pain, exhaustion, depression), contact your health care provider at once. Do not expose your child to chickenpox or measles while taking this medicine. If exposure occurs, and the child has not had chickenpox or has not been properly vaccinated, contact your health care provider at once. Be sure to read the patient instructions provided with this medicine. Do not stop giving this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Parents of children with previous medical conditions should talk with their child’s health care provider before giving this medicine. Do not give more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. Warnings:

Particular care is needed if your child is transferred from oral corticosteroids to inhaled corticosteroids. During periods of stress or a severe asthma attacks, patients who have been withdrawn form oral corticosteroids should restart oral corticosteroids in large amounts at once and contact their doctor. Your child should carry medical identification indicating that he or she may need additional medicine during periods of stress or severe asthma attack.

Most severe:  Allergic reaction (rash; hives; breathing difficulty; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, and tongue); increased wheezing.

Common Side Effects:

Most common:  Respiratory tract infection; runny nose; coughing; middle ear infection; viral infection; oral infection; stomach problems; vomiting; diarrhea; stomach pain; nosebleed; rash; redness of the eyes.
