It is also employed to prevent breathing difficulties induced by exercise, exposure to cold and dry air, or inhalation of substances such as pet dander, pollen, dust mites, or chemicals like perfume. The mechanism of action involves preventing the release of substances that contribute to inflammation in the air passages of the lungs.
Uses and Dosage
Cromolyn oral inhalation is provided as a liquid solution to be inhaled through the mouth using a specialized nebulizer—a device that converts medication into a mist for inhalation.
When used to prevent asthma symptoms, it is typically administered four times a day. For preventing breathing difficulties triggered by exercise, exposure to cold and dry air, or inhalation of specific substances, it is usually used 10 to 15 minutes before the activity or contact with the trigger.
Adhere to your doctor’s directions precisely; do not exceed or reduce the dosage or use it more frequently than prescribed.
Cromolyn effectively manages asthma but does not cure it. While you may experience symptom improvement shortly after starting cromolyn, it may take up to four weeks to feel the full benefits. Consistent use is essential for effectiveness. If there’s no improvement after four weeks, inform your doctor. Continue using cromolyn even if you feel well, and do not discontinue it without consulting your doctor.
Cromolyn oral inhalation is designed to prevent asthma attacks but does not halt an ongoing attack. Your doctor will prescribe a short-acting inhaler for use during asthma attacks.
