Famvir (famciclovir) is an antiviral medication used to treat herpes virus infections such as genital herpes, cold sores, and acute herpes zoster (Shingles). It inhibits the herpes virus’ development and spread, allowing the body to combat the illness. Famciclovir will not cure herpes, but it will help to alleviate the symptoms.
Famvir is occasionally used to treat herpes outbreaks around the mouth, genitals, or anal region in patients who have the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Famvir Dosage
Mucocutaneous/Immunocompetent Host: Usual Adult Dose for Herpes Simplex:
Herpes genitals:
- Recommended starting dose with 250 mg orally three times a day for seven to ten days (CDC)
Dose for Herpes Simplex in Adults
Host: Mucocutaneous/Immunocompromised
- In HIV-positive individuals with recurrent orolabial or genital herpes, use 500 mg orally twice a day for 7 days
Suppression: Usual Adult Dose for Herpes Simplex
Recurrent genital herpes suppression on a long-term basis:
- Patients with a good immune system should take 250 mg orally twice a day.
- The recommended dose is Famvir 500 mg orally twice a day for HIV-infected individuals.
Dose for Herpes Zoster in Adults:
- For 7 days, take 500 mg orally every 8 hours.
Dose for Herpes Simplex Labialis in Adults:
- 1500 mg orally as single dosage for recurrent herpes labialis
Direction
- Famvir should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Read any medication guides or instruction papers that come with your prescription and follow all of the instructions on the label. Your doctor may have to adjust your dose from time to time.
- Taking more of this medication than recommended will not improve its effectiveness.
- Famvir for shingles is best administered within 48 hours after the onset of symptoms of shingles (such as pain, burning, blisters).
- This drug should be started as soon as possible when the first signs of cold sores or genital herpes occur (such as tingling, burning, blisters).

Avoid rubbing your eyes after touching an affected area. Regularly washing your hands will prevent you from spreading the virus to others.
