Description

Indications

This medication is an extended-release formulation of flupentixol, utilized in the treatment of mental and mood disorders such as schizophrenia and psychosis. Flupentixol decanoate is typically prescribed for patients who have previously been administered regular doses of flupentixol orally and may benefit from less frequent dosing for long-term maintenance treatment. Flupentixol aids in improving cognitive clarity, reducing hallucinations and negative thoughts, and enhancing daily functioning.

Belonging to the thioxanthenes class of medications, flupentixol is also categorized as a neuroleptic. Its mechanism of action involves influencing the balance of natural substances, known as neurotransmitters, in the brain.

Uses and Dosage

This medication is administered via injection into a muscle by a healthcare professional, following your doctor’s instructions, typically every 2 to 3 weeks. It should not be injected into a vein.

The dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor will adjust your dose to find the optimal amount for you. Initially, your first injection may be at a lower dose than your regular dose, with a possible second dose given 4 to 10 days later. Your doctor may also advise taking the oral form of this medication until the injected form takes effect.

Consistent use of this medication is crucial to maximize its benefits. It may be helpful to mark your calendar to remember when to receive your next dose. Ensure you keep all your medical appointments.

Do not discontinue using this medication without consulting your doctor, as stopping suddenly could worsen your condition. Your doctor may need to gradually decrease your dose.

Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen.
